Nvidia vs Raedon

An earlier post asked about NVIDIA 6800 vs. a Raedon x850. Is the 6800 the
latest and greatest. I know Katy was big on NVIDIA and Peter McLeland
recommended a Gainward Golden Sample so that's what I got. I am now
considering a new (second) card to run more monitors. Has Raedon left
NVIDIA in the dust or do they still compete. Would I be better off with the
Matrox? I used Matrox years ago ... Millennium and Millennium II.

The Geforce goes up to the 7800 GTX model. Here's a comparison chart of
the Geforce and the ATI models in this field.

I have a 6800GT, but the GPU is only part of this equation.
A fast GPU is fine, but in order to evaluate GPU's for flight simulation,
you have to evaluate that GPU on a given system. Even then, the answer is
incomplete for flight simulation, as the simulator itself will respond
differently even to the same GPU as other system components are upgraded or
downgraded.
The bottom line for MSFS is that it's not really designed to have every
slider maxed out to the right, and just where you will be in the graphics
equation, considering you're using a high end GPU from either manufacturer
will in large part depend on the rest of your system...specifically the
mobo, the RAM, and most importantly, the processor!
FWIW, I agree with KT (I usually do.....she's one smart lady :) I have gone
with Nvidia since I began working with the simulator. I've seen the ATI
cards on high end systems, and for my own perception of what the graphics
and performance should be in FS9, I chose Nvidia.

Thanks for the responses. A year and a half ago I thought I knew the cards
pretty well but as I look now, there's a whole new set of numbers. Is the
6800 a step up from the 59??
When I built my puter awhile ago, the 5950?? something pro was the best or
the 98?? pro on the Raedon side.

Because I built the whole computer ... new everything, I didn't get the
highest end available...I got the Gainward fx5700 ultra Golden Sample and I
like it. The Golden Sample makes a difference. I will try the same thing
when I get a new one.

When I upgraded from Dell to my Hypersonic gaming machine, the GeForce FX
5900 Ultra came with it. It was fine on this high end system, but Katy
seemed to have some issues with the FX cards so I checked them out. She was
right in my opinion. The new EVGA 6800GT coupled with the other heavy
hardware on the system have made a big difference. I'm not a frame rate nut
and have them targeted at 32. This frees up everything for additional
graphics work. I see things that weren't there before :)))
FWIW, the new kid on the block graphics wise will be the PCI express cards,
and there is a 6800 PCI-X, but you will need a mobo that supports this. It's
a whole new build, and the way I will go next year.

Actually you are referring to PCI-E (as in Express) The PCI-X is a
different (but similar) standard and is used in the new PowerMac G5's.
