When I power-up my system the the BIOS displays
166MHz - Single Channel Mode
I have one 512MB DDR memory card installed.
The card label is 512M PC3200 DDR INFINEON.
Is this the best way to run the system?
Should I change something?
Thank You
Bob Whitman
PS: I have a ASUS A7N8X-E DELUXE motherboard
with Windows XP pro installed.
The motherboard has a NVIDIA nForce2 chipset.
Well, if I am not mistaken, that is a dual channel chipset.... and the only way to use dual channel is to have a match pair of memory modules and putting them in the appropriate slots..... if you only have one module, it can only run in single channel mode.... In the mobo manual it should tell you what slots to place your memory in for it to work in dual channel mode. So if that is the case, then you can buy another one of those modules and it will run in dual channel.... not single channel.
You're right obviously, that is why it's running single channel because he only has one stick. The point is still, if his cpu is running at 166 then there is little to no reason to run the memory at 200. Some tests on the nf2 boards have shown (a while ago, and I don't have a source handy) that running memory assyncronously to the cpu (faster) does little and sometimes hurts performance.
As for dual channel in a NF2 board, that too is questionable. On paper is it better but in practice it doesn't do much.
you really need to consolidate your posts into one thread and call it:
A7N8X-E Deluxe problems and questions:
I think this is your fifth or sixth post about your new motherboard.
Your system should run it at 200MHz. The problem with the A7N is that it does a terrible job at managing default settings and detection. I had to manually set all my BIOS settings.
When you consolidate your threads and issues. You should also as a common courtisey list your other major components so that people attempting to help you have more detailed information to go off of. I have been using my A7N for 2+ years now and once you have it stable it is a rock solid board.
