Hi all,
Is there any way to plan a flight in FS9 flight planner to plan a flight
pattern rather than a station to station flight?
In other words I would like to depart and arrive at the same FBO but follow
a preset course, much like a search pattern, or if you like a bombing
mission.
Even better I would like to fly, for example, 1 hour at 90', 1 hour 300' ,
and 1 hour back to my point of departure.
TIA,
Timmy

Why not just do it? Even in the UK you do not have to file a flight plan if
you are flying VFR and below the airways.

I think he wants to create a flight plan (GPS or FSnav???) which will
allow the aircraft to follow a route that returns to the departure
point. Well, maybe....

"but what a waste of life"
Not really.
I have several flight plans that start at my "home" airport and make a
"circle" of roughly 100nm flying distance with landings at several small
airports along the way.
I use them for practice. It's a lot more fun that simply doing touch and
goes, and provides a lot of training in the "going up" and "coming down"
aspects of flight.
And if anybody needs to know how to set one up (it is slightly tricky), let
me know and I will post directions...

Thank you for your somewhat distant and uninformed observation of my life
(or as you said "waste" thereof)..
I posted a question in this group because I had question. I thought it was a
legitmate one. It was something I was curious about. That's all.

Don't take his post too seriously. He is an ex-military pilot in real life
who now advocates simming with no rules, flight plans, or ATC control.
*He* often forgets that there are as many ways to enjoy simming as there
are people who do it and as a result, sometimes makes comments that can
appear rather rude.
However, as someone who has been here a few years, I can assure you that he
didn't mean any ill will with his comment.

Quite right! No offence ever meant. I am often very rude by sheer
immaturity. I never wanted to be an airline pilot so I frequently forget
that many good blokes do. Sorry.
I'have just been quilling around Africa. It's a great place, but the default
mesh leaves a lot to be desired. Think what a superb adventure it might be
in FS10?

Let me give this a try. The flight planner in FS as you have discovered is
not very user friendly but there is a somewhat tedious way to do what you
want.
Create a flight plan by selecting your departure airport and then select a
destination airport as close as possible to your start and let the planner
create a direct GPS route. With that done you will be in map view where you
can then zoom in at your starting location and drag the route line with the
mouse pointer to a fix that suits your needs and continue doing this until
you return to your start point. Along the way delete the waypoints from the
right side that you do not need including the destination airport. You
should then be able to create a return route. In the same window you can
move up, down, left or right with the mouse. As you drag the mouse to the
edges you will see large arrows indicating the direction the map will move.
Save the plan and try it with the gps. It should work for you and hopefully
I explained the concept to get you started.
good luck

"Along the way delete the waypoints from the right side that you do not need

Unfortunately, when you delete the destination airport, all of the waypoints
are also deleted.
I will write out full instructions if anybody wants them, but let me give
some of hints for those who would like to figure it on their own.
When an airport is the destination, Flight Planner uses a point that is
roughly at the center of the airport. When departing from an airport, it
uses your exact departure point on the airport. So, if you are departing
from a parking area and returning to the same airport, you can zoom in to a
very large scale and see the line between the parking area and the center of
the airport. You can then grab that line and go.
Make sure you have all of the following visible: airports, VOR's, NDB's, and
intersections. This gives you plenty of points to "hook" as you build your
plan.
Good luck...

Didnt know that thanks. This happens even if have the start airport as the
final waypoint and then delete the destination? I really havent tried it I
kind of just made it up. I guess the best way is to make the start and
destination the same and then plot the route.

With the flight planner you can plan a flight from your airport to the
nearest and extend your flight to whatever point you want. Coming back you
ask ATC to change to your own airport.
With FSNAV it's easier, set your plan from your airport and go around to
whatever point you want and return to your airport. The only thing you have
to do is that the landing point should be a few yards before your starting
point.
With a littlebit of fantasie (easy for VA pilots) you can make it.
Happy flying.

Thanks for this comment.. was confident FSNav could create and
execute such a route without much difficulty but haven't tried [to do]
it as yet.
If user was to analyze and make tables of fuel flow, v_rates, and air
speeds for their type based on GW and ALTs [to climb].. then FSNav
will return fairly accurate fuel loads, times, BoDs, etc. Certainly we
already know when to begin descent..yes?
-Gregory
p.s. have you tried to edit nodes in FSNav for tricky approach
profiles.. over terrain for instance? i.e. Medford Rogue?

Happens all the while in real flight training. You file as round robin. Just
add your waypoints to the list.

Well I decided to try this as an experiment....two things
1) Making the dep and dest airport the same and a gps route...I was unable
to get any red line route to drag and build waypoints. Started from a runway
and parking gate and no line showed. So this method hasnt worked so far.
Will keep tinkering
2) When I selected a different destination airport I was able to build a
route all the way back to the start point, but the planner does not allow
for the destination airport to be deleted, which makes sense. So it can be
done this way and then disengage the AP when reaching back to the original
airport.

You will need to start at a parking area as far as possible from the center
of the airport. Then just keep enlarging the map. Eventually, you should get
a line. Then just drag it to anything to get started, you can delete the
unnecessary waypoints later...
