i have a 256mb stick of OCZ performance rev 3.2 ram, and 512mb stick of kingston ddr400 value ram, running at 166 = 333. since i am way strapped for cash after buying a bunch of parts, i was wondering if i needed to get new ram to OC my opty 165. any input is appreciated.
i dont know how much luck you are going to have since your sticks arent the same size or frequency (i assume that since you are running @333mhz that your OCZ is rated for 333mhz operation). Its not to say that it cant be done, but you will have much better luck either getting a new set of non-value ram, or since you are strapped, even another 512 stick of the kingston ram will get you further than i will think you will get with the unmatched pair.
You can OC it, but I don't think you'd get as far as you would like. Save up about $100, and I think you can get a decent pair of 512MB sticks that will get you a lot farther than those two. Newegg has a pretty good deal right now, CORSAIR XMS 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Dual Channel Kit System Memory - Retail, for $92.00 and a $15 Mail-In Rebate, so thats $77.00. Here is the link:
awesome. thanks for the info guys. i'll just run stock for now, and when i get enough $$ i'll just get 2 gigs of pc4000 g.skill or something like that. it's $152 right now on newegg, hopefully it stays like that 'til i get some $$$ cause i can't really justify spending $90 for just a gig right now, hehe. plus i want to have 2 gigs, and dont want to do the whole 4x512 2T thing. gonna be a while before i upgrade again because this is supposed to last me at least 2 years, so gonna run vista which should be able to see more ram than just 3gb. ;p
