I have a cisco pix 515e router/firewall. I can run a voice chat with people on the same network through msn messenger, yet I cannot do the same with others outside the network.
I know that the voice over IP protocol is running, hence I can contact the others inside the network over msn messenger. Though I am not sure what is causing the blocking of the voice/video chat with the outside world.
What could be causing this?

It's all about the ports. You need to do a little research and see what ports your video/voice software is using and put a rule in your firewall to allow them to pass through.

It makes sense, because the traffic on the LAN side of your network is basically unrestricted and all of the ports will be open. Once you cross over to the WAN side, then your firewall opens up a can of whoop ass.

im assuming your talking about the feature of voice chat built into the msn messanger. this is not the same as voice over ip.

I figured that it can't be vioce over ip because it is enabled on the router. Thank you for the confirming that. Others in my group were questioning that. My problem is not knowing what is causing the blocking.
I noticed that I cannot run voice chat, video chat, send files over msn messenger.
