When starting up Windows98 I amrequested to insert a bootable disk. Why
should I suddenly get this problem

do you have a floppy in ?
if so remove it

otherwise, redetect the harddrive in the bios...
if you can detect it ok and get the machine to bootup...
but the problem happens again...it's time to change the cmos battery

Your hard drive may have died.
