P4 psu compability with AMD mobo?

hi all, this may sound like a complete newb question, but i want to make sure before i try it.
i have an older 450w psu that i bought as a replacement for a p4 system.. i was going to try it in my new computer to try to narrow down the reasons for the problems ive been having.. but i want to make sure that im not going to fry anything... has anyone ever heard of a problem like this.. the psu is about 2 years old.
