If you are trying to backup data I would recomend getting an external hard drive which is faster and easier to use than cd's. As for the program, Im not sure.

If it's just pure data then use WinRAR to compress and split them up.

If it ain't broken, modd it!

right to that: use any archiving software (winrar is one, 7-zip is another) to pack and split your backed up data, then burn it. Moreover, if said data is easily packed, then you may burn it on less CDs. Add to that the recovery option you can give an archive, and even in cases of burn errors the data may be recovered.

if the files are not formatted in a content-protected format, then no such luck - and most formats can be broken anyway. The best you can do affordably is convert your documents into digitally signed ones, such as a digitally signed pdf - but on most computers, printing a document is as hard as having it on screen and hit 'Print' - without protections against this.

Password protect the .rar file maybe? (Impossible to crack once over 6characters)

CD protection of non-commercial basis can be cracked very easily.

I've used WinACE to compress and a little utillity called hjsplit to break files into managable chunks, typicaily for e-mailing or the like. For archiveing watch the file size and don't exceed 650-680 MB. For a CD to ask for the next like alot of commercial software does you need to create an "autorun" file. While I've not done it personally you could do a little research on the web and find out how. I belive all you need is a text editor program like "notepad".
Find hjsplit here.
DC

Just Googled "autorun". Found lots of neat stuff. Check thisOut.

I think most CD-Writing packages also do that (Nero, Roxio). You just have to play with them to figure it out, and it won't require you to archive the files first. Have you thought about getting a DVD burner? They are cheap enough now.

If it ain't broken, modd it!

You can set up Winace to automatically split archives (no need for hjsplit), which will then be named *.ACE, *.A00, *.A01, *.A02... and that will reconstruct the archive upon extraction by itself (no need to put it back together before extracting).
