Removing file-program associations.

Last response: in Windows 95/98/ME

It's relatively easy to associate a file name extension
with a program, such as .TXT with Notepad. But if a
given program is associated with a list of different
extensions, is there a way of removing one extension
from the list? (A recently installed program has
grabbed a bunch of extensions for execution under it,
which is fine by me except that included a couple of
extensions I'd like to grab right back.) There seems
no obvious way to edit the list of extensions in
Windows Explorer, for example. Thanks.

Open either MyComputer or Explorer.

On the Menu bar click View > Folder Options > File Types

Scroll to the ext. you want to remove/re-associate and make your changes.

Click Apply > Ok.

I note that you mention associating files is relatively easy so I include
the below only as reference.

How to Create a File Association in Windows 98 and Windows Me

Left click once on a file you want to associate with a program to hilite it.
Next hold down the Shift key and right click on it to get the popup menu.
Select "Open With" from the list.
Select the program you want to open it with by left clicking it once.
Put a check in "Always open......."
Click Apply/Ok.

**Note: You may find it better to leave "Always open......." unchecked
until you are sure that you have the correct program you want to use. Once
you are sure of the program to use, then check it.

Yes, I'm familiar with the procedure. The particular thing I
wanted to be able to edit was the list of file extensions
for an existing association (in my case, a new media player
which I'm happy to have associated with various things like
..wav, but which I'd sooner not have associated with things
like .dat). Maybe there's no direct method of editing this
list in File Types, and I need to manufacture a new
association for the few extensions I want to grab back.
Maybe I need to go to the directory, something which tends
to make my remaining hair want to fall out :)

Thanks.

If the program does not allow the option (many do), then remove it
from the Registry. The key will be HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.ext (where .ext
is the extension in question)
You can also re-associate it in the Registry if you prefer, rather
than remove it. You can even include it in a list yourself, if you
match it with another extension.

I'm not sure if I read correctly, but have you tried removing the extension
in File Types that has the association you don't want?

If you're talking of the association set in the app itself within it's
options, uncheck the ones you don't want associated with the app. If you are
talking of the list itself in the app, it would take a code change or reg
hack if possible to accomplish the task.

The app (Nero) offers no option that would help. I have no
idea where the list is buried in the app. What I was trying
to do was to modify the list of extensions (eighteen) in one
particular item (NeroMediaPlayer media files) in File Types
that was created by installation of Nero. AFAIK, editing
offers no opportunity to change the list; opportunity to
change the action, yes -- opportunity to change the
extension list, no (unless I'm overlooking something).
