Hi guys
im building anew computer and i need your opinions about which of the next CPU and GPU would be better for runing games:

Intel Dual Core 2.66Ghz
Nvidia 7900GT 256MB

or

Amd Athlon Dual Core 3800+
Nvidia 7600GT 256MB

Thanx!!!

The 805 is the 2.66 Ghz processor you were asking about. It is the "budget dual core" (about $135). It actually runs with a 533 front side bus, which from what I have read, makes it a killer overclocker. I am seriously considering getting one of these to see how far it can go! As far as gaming goes, your first combo is going to be better because of the GPU.

Frankly I would do the 3800 and 7900GT together. Your problem with the first group is your CPU will bottleneck the crap out of your Video Card. The problem with the second group is the video card isn't powerful enough to play some of the newer games, and thus future games, as high as I'm sure you want to play them.

not true the +3800 will not bottleneck your 7900gt.

I have a +3700(sandiego) with a x1900xtx and it runs blazing fast.

he said the first group: intel + 7900GT, not amd.

the best would be the amd cpu + 7900GT, but if choices are fixed, then i would pick the first one. i've read a review of this dual core 2.66 and it... sucks :p
low performance, high power consumpation and heat, but it's cheap.

i thik it would be better if you bought a single core 3800+ and 7900GT than the dual core 2.66 and the 7900GT

Your best be get both ATI and Nvidia cards, when you plan on playing a game designed for a certain card, simply swap one out and replace for another, and install drivers. :D

hey, but that makes me wonder:

if i have a motherboard with 2 pci-e x16 slots... then i connect, let's suppose a x1900xtx and a 7900gtx... then i will be able to select which card i use for a certain game?
that would be cool if it was possible :p

Option 1, but I suggest waiting a few weeks cause Intel will be releasing the Pentium D 915 & 925 and obviously those will be a better choice (much better choice).

If you can wait a few weeks, or possibly until this autumn, you will have a better selection or products. By that time, AM2 will have been released and matured a little, and Conroe will be hot off the press (?). A few weeks ago, I would have said to build right away, but it's getting towards crunch time, and a best bet for a gaimng system will be to wait. There may even be a few new video cards released by then, which will only add to the selection and decrease the prices on current products.

I'd be surprised if there was a single game that would run faster on a 7600 GT than on a 7900 GT, regardless of the processor.

Which is why I noted that it would be ideal to have the X2 3800+/7900GT combo.

That would be ideal, but that's not what the fellow asked.

Basically, if you're forced between two specific choices of systems, regardless of CPU, the 7900 GT wins over the 7600 GT as far as gaming goes.

Even stifled with an Intel CPU the 7900 GT will still beat the 7600 GT.

Stop already folks. FIRST OFF, lets ask what Resolution his monitor is capable off, THEN we can more accurately advise him what he would be better off with. On another note, Overclocking the 805 is not a good idea. Sure you can probably get the CPU way up there in GHZ's, but the bandwidth between the CPU and northbridge will kill your performance regardless. There are 3.5ghz celeron's out there, I've used 1.6 ghz CPU's that perform better. Match the whole systems performance, and you'll see the nicest bang for the buck.
