wanted to upgraded 98 to xp. install did not convet to ntfs. i unistalled
xp (stupid) then tried to reinstall it using the new install method. could
not delete the existing partition because set up files already exist on that
partition. i tried to install using the recommended "upgrade" method. now i
get message that the install was blocked due to Microsoft Shared Fax Client.

As Haggis suggested, (and presuming you don't need to keep anything on
the partition), use a Windows 98 Startup disk and delete the partition
in question using FDISK. If you need to keep the data, get BootIt NG,
follow the instructions for making a bootable installation disk, boot to
it, but *do_not* install. Press Cancel, instead. This will put you into
Maintenance Mode where you can use Partition Work to resize the existing
partition(s) and slide them to the end of the disk, leaving room at the
head of the disk where you can clean install XP.

Then, please go to the Windows XP newsgroups for assistance.

you do not need a boot floppy
just set your bios to boot from your XP cd
then you will get an option which allows you to format the drive NTFS
prior to installing the OS

You can get a utility to create a Windows startup floppy from
www.bootdisk.com. If you haven't been using a startup floppy then this is
probably the cause of the problem. You should be able to boot to floppy,
delete the existing partitioning, and run setup.
