Hi all,
Can someone please tell me how I can extract the rundll32.exe from the
Windows 98se CD-Rom?

I think I have a corrupted rundll32.exe file or it is missing, because I get
an error message when trying to open windows control panel.

Also on another W98 pc, I get Norton's saying it has found a virus relating
to rundll32.exe so also need to replace it on this PC as well.

Thank you for any assistance
Barry

Tsk Tsk on the others. If your getting a notification of a virus from any
AV app that has rundll32.exe involved, you need to find out what the virus
is and clean your machine first. If you don't, rest assured you will not
last even a short while.

Open NAV
Click on Reports > Quarantine.
Click ONCE and ONLY ONCE on the file quarantined.
On the Menu/Tool bar click Properties.
Go to Symantecs encyclopedia and look up the virus for instructions on
properly removing it.

Once again tonight I missed the last part of a post, with further info....in this
case, that a second pc was involved with a virus reported. That'll teach me to try

<g>... I keep my office window (immediately behind my desk) cracked open
a couple of inches or more during the winter, and it's still usually the
warmest room in the house, even when the household thermostat is set to
72, the office door is closed, and the heat register in this room is
closed. Summers sure got easier after I installed central air
conditioning.

For the computer with the virus, better do as Brian A. said. You may use
SFC (System File Checker) to get rundll32.exe on a clean computer...

(A) Extract RUNDLL32.EXE, if "access denied" is mentioned...

RUNDLL32.EXE
Desc: Run a DLL as an App
Loc: C:\WINDOWS
Size: 24,576 bytes
Mod: Friday, April 23, 1999 10:22:00 PM
Ver: 4.10.1998

That is old enough (Win98SE) never to have been modified by an update.
So, extract it with SFC.

(1) "START, Run, SFC"
(2) Bolt "Extract one file from installation disk"
(3) Enter "RUNDLL32.EXE" in the "Specify..." box.
(4) Click "Start". It should offer to "Save file in C:\WINDOWS".
If not, make it so.
(5) In "Restore from", if not already pre-filled, browse to
(a) Installation CD (likely the Win98 folder) or
(b) The folder that has your cabs on the hard drive, likely
"C:\WINDOWS\options\cabs\".
(5) Click "OK"

If it discovers the file already exists, it will offer to back it up.
May as well do so. If it discovers the file is "in use", it will request
that you reboot to complete the install.
