Gonna buy a laptop REALLY soon. Can't decide between these two. Something you should know before you recommend which one I should get: 1) I don't use Bluetooth, 2) I don't necessarily need a webcam, 3) I am an intense gamer, 4) I am not very rich, 5) I am looking for the best deal without spending excessive money, and 6) I don't plan on upgrading laptops for another half decade or so. So, mainly, I've come to the conclusion that the only thing that matters is the graphics card. Is the $600 worth the difference between the x1600 and the x1400? Please, help me choose which laptop I should get.

If you're looking for a brand that is cheap and has great performance, go Sager (sagernotebook.net or pctorque.com). For the actual card, X1600 is better than the X1400. Oh, and you should know that the X700 is better than the X1400. Good luck.

Well, I think that $600US is quite a lot to swallow as the difference between w Mobility X1400 and X1600, (and I've noted that otherwise, the machines seem to be effectively identical) but with the Mobility X1400, which is little different from an X1300, there's hadly any gaming capability availible. The least I'd go with is an X1600, as though, like the X1400, is what most people consider a "4-pipeline card," still actually has 12 pixel shader units like most mid-range cards of today like the X800GTO or even the 7600GT. Given that advancement toward games that use pixel shaders more than anything else seems to be the way things are headed, I'd place a lot more "lasting power" on the X1600 than on the X1400. Perhaps on a scale of 2-3 years.

However, as I said... $600US is a LOT to swallow for the difference between what is effectively a "low-end" card and a "middling" card, even on a laptop.

The X300 is the same part as a 9600. Given that I've overclocked the piss out of it so it performs like a 9600XT, and that I can play Need For Speed Most Wanted at 1024x768 with medium settings, on my Inspiron 6000, I'd say that either the x1400 or x1600 are decent. If you're really a very poor buthardcore gamer, I reccomend don't bother looking for gaming performance in a laptop; keep it in the PC and just get a light notebook.

if you really want to know about the notebooks you want to purchase, i recommend you check out www.notebookforums.com or www.notebookreview.com first. i believe there is a difference in build quality between the travelmate 8200 and the acer aspire.

Man is everyone affraid to say it. Get a Dell xps laptop. Comes standard with a 7900gs and will smoke the 1600x for around $2600usd.

I saw some notebook benches (can't find them) that the X1400 stood up pretty well to an X700.

Didn't really beat it, but it stood toe-to-toe with it, and has all those nifty video features, too.

My minimums for gaming would be an X1400 or X700, I personally don't think the X1600 is worth the extra $600 at all.
