Any help would be great. I need to pick a graphics card and order it ASAP for my new rig. (see sig)
My budget is $250 max! Also, I need to run it in my 500W PSU.

I am also concerned about compatibility with my mobo. I like nVidia.
I'm thinking a 6800GT board.

Is there a better choice?

I highly recommend you either get the 7600GT, or the 6800GS.

The 6800GS is an overclocking beast if you are into that, and on average it performs slightly better than a comparable 6800GT. They can be had for around $170. But they are starting to get very hard to find, as they are being replaced by the 7600GT.

Here are some benchmarks for the 7600GT in FEAR.

As you can see, the 7600GT performs slightly below the X1800 series. So, it has a very good price/performance ratio.

Haven't pulled the trigger yet ... too busy.
Is the 7900GT that much better?
My son has offered to kick in some money on the card so maybe I should do it, if it's worth the extra cost.

The 7900GT is in a completely different league than the 7600GT. The 7900GT performs on par (if not a little better) with the 7800GTX. If you have the money, go for it. Keep in mind though, it does require a dedicated power connection, unlike the 7600GT.

ya, but his ps is more than enough for what he has/is getting.

Yes, if you are set on nvidia and have the $ the 7900gt is the best bang for the buck in Nv land. Whole 'nother world above the 7600!

The X850 XT for 170 can rip the 7600 GT apart. Also the X1800 GTO wold be faster if you unlocked the card to 16 pipes, the 7600 GT suffers from a 128 bit memory conection. the 1800 GTO may be more expensive but you WILL get better performance. As for the X850 XT it dosen't support SM 3.0 but most games have SM 2.0 right now.

I'd like to try an nVidia board this time. I've been doing mostly ATIs in the past ... a 9550, 9700, a Rage 32MB! For some reason I've always had "fussy" load issues with drivers.

I may indeed go for the 7900GT!

Stay tuned.

Well the fastest AGP card out now is the nVidia 7800GS but it for the most part will require about another $50, the BFG version is like $300 but the average is about $285 to $300 (according to Newegg).

I'd say go for that

Here's a stupid question from a novice.
If it requires a dedicated supply of power, do you have to buy 2 PS's or do you connect it to a powerful PS in a different way?

Dedicated supply of power meaning it has a direct connection to your power supply (instead of drawing power off of the pci-e bus). Basically, you just plug the video card in.

Price update ....
I see the 7900GTs about $150 more than the 7600GTs ....
not $50 more. Not worth it for me. I can run with the 7600 for a year and then upgrade again if I so wish.

Get the X1800GTO because it will overclock high and unlock to XL if not XT performance.
