Dual core is 1 physical CPU with 2 cores. Dual socket is 2 physical CPUs. Unless you are building a server, you don't want dual socket. You can run a single CPU with a single core on a board that is designed for dual core support.

something must have really come up to need 2 seperate cpu's. thats usually server mobo's that have them AFAIK. if its for home use a single socket dual core cpu might suffice. a dual core cpu is one which has 2 cores on one socket for lack of better wording. of course if you really need the power you could put 2 dual cores in a dual CPU setup.
