Win 98 SE stalls while loading and there is no bootlog.txt.

I press the button for a hardware restart and the next time, it brings
up the menu.

If I choose, Write Boot Log File, it still doesn't write one. Why not?
:) In fact some Windows document says that whenever it doesn't
successfully start windows, it is supposed to write bootlog.txt, but
it never does. (It's supposed to be in the root directory, C:, but
it's not there.)

If I choose Step-by-step, I can see it try to start all the drivers
that are in system.ini plus some others. I forget where the list is
of those others???

So I answer N, no, to the driver that it stalled on last time, and it
gets a little farther** the next time, but it still stalls.

**It's not really farther, in that the next time the file that it
stalls on is higher in the system.ini list than the one I said No to.

I often let it start in Safe mode, because it says that I can fix the
OS there, but I don't know how. Aside from running msconfig and
keeping it from trying to run the system.ini file that it stalled on,
what else can I do.

In this case, a friend wanted me to put his harddrive into a new
computer, and when I did, it installed a whole lot of hardware
(although it couldn't find a few files and I Skipped them. I don't
know if he had the same problem with the old computer, and he's away
for 4 months.

Thanks a lot.

Bootlog.txt is a hidden file.
Open either explorer or MyComputer
On the Menu bar click View > Folder Options > View tab
Make sure "Show all files" is selected and "Hide file extensions..." is not.
Apply > Ok out.

What files hang the loading of Windows?

Thanks. Thanks a lot. I'm so used to having all files showing, on my
computer, that I forgot all about what's hidden and what's not.

Sometimes I think instead of getting smarter, I'm getting dumber.

I'll let you know tomorrow or Wednesday, after I work on this a bit
more. I'm going to start in 10 minutes, but I won't quit until I'm
falling out of my chair.

(How does that work in a newsgroup with so much traffic? Does anyone,
including you, go back a 300 or 400 posts or more to keep up with an
old thread? I try to post here only when I have time to read and
reply frequently, but I'm so busy lately, sometimes I don't have time
when I think I will.)

I personally have a rule set to delete posts after 90 days, which I set when MS
mentioned that was the time allotment they were going to keep them. I don't know
if they've changed that or not. Other than that all posts can be googled from
today's all the way back to who knows when. (many years).

Thanks. Did that last night.

>What files hang the loading of Windows?

I've made some progress and the problem now is that it hangs on the
registry before it can hang on any particular driver. It gets to a
certain point and gives a blue screen that says on the bottom
something like "Loading files" or "Restoring files" and at the end
says, and each time I reboot says:

Microsoft Registry Checker You have restored a good registry.

Windows found an error in your system files and restored a recent
backup of the files to fix the problem. Press Enter to restart your
computer.
--------------

I press Enter as instructed, and it restarts, and when it gets to the
same point, I see it running the Registry Checker and get the same
message. 4 cycles the same.

So I use F8 to get to the menu and chose Dos start only (option 5) and
I ran Regscan /Restore and saw that there were 4 files available:
rb005, 004, 002, and 003.cab. The oldest were listed first. I chose
each of them in sequence, starting with the oldest, and of course it
told me to restart Windows after it did the restore, and every time
when I got to the same place, I got the message at the top here.

So I booted to Dos, reinstalled afaik the newest .cab file, booted
again, and ran Regscan /Fix and I saw the progress bar go to the
end, and it said it had repaired it successfullly, and to restart, and
again I got the same message at the top. I again ran Regscan
/Restore, and it was at this time I noticed the oldest of the 4 .cab
files was gone.

So now I have 3 files left. Should I Restore the second newest and
then try to repair that? Or what :) ?

Thanks again.

I forgot to say that after I Fixed the registry, when it first
restarted, it installed all the hardware items again, such as the
System Timer, the system clock, the keyboard, etc. There were 23 or
more.

Some required the Win98SE CD which I provided.

A small number of files it couldn't find in my Windows, Windows\System
or on the CD. I have a list if it matters. I had to press Skip to
get past these. (uhcd.sys was one I didn't find. There were 5 or 6
more.)

But I did better than the first time I put this harddrive in this
computer.

It was after it was done that it said to restart, and that's when I
got the message that it restored the registry during the restart! And
that's when the cycle began again.

What I don't understand is that sometimes, I had to Browse for the
file, and it only showed Drives A, B, and C:. Never D: which is the
CD ROM. Yet one of the messages was "The file xxxx.xxx on Win98SE
CD-Rom cannot be found". Did it have access to the CD drive or not?

Check here to see where they are on the CD.
http://home.comcast.net/~bascon58/98SE_cabs.htm
On the page press ctrl+f to bring up a fing window.
Type in the name without the extension and press Enter.
Note the .cab it's in.

If you know the location on the CD, type in the full path to the .cab. No need
to type in the file.
