Try Control panel -system applet - Highlight the DVD drive and click
properties.

Click the settings tab and make sure Auto Insert Notification is checked.

You're right. However, some burner software installations disabled this on
purpose for proper operation.

That was true once upon a time, but AFAIK no remotely recent burning software does
that anymore. Nero (at least through version 5.5) used a .vxd driver file to *only*
disable the autoinsert notification while the Nero program was in use, effectively
overriding temporarily the enabled setting in Device Manager. I don't recall what
method Easy CD Creator used, but IIRC they did not disable autoinsert in DM, at
least not in the more recent versions. The fact that the OP refers to a DVD drive
indicates (hopefully) that the associated software is more recent. It would
certainly be helpful if they would post back with details such as what burning
softwares and versions are installed, if the problem persists after following Jon's
procedure. :-)

Sorry...AFAIK = As Far As I Know
Neither of the two programs you mention will disable autoinsert notification on
their own, nor do they normally need to, AFAIK.
Do you have Autoinsert Notification enabled for the DVD drive, as Jon explained in
his reply?
Start> Settings> Control Panel> System> Device Manager tab, click the + sign next to
the CDROM category to open it, then double-click the DVD drive there. Click the
Settings tab and ensure that the Autoinsert Notification box is check-marked....if
not, check it and click OK all the way out, then reboot.

If that does not help, you may have autorun disabled. The easiest way to adjust
that is to install TweakUI, and then enable Autorun for data and audio CD's on the
TweakUI Paranoia tab.
TweakUI1.33:
http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/powert...

Otherwise, you must go into the Registry with regedit and change the settings
there....TweakUI is much easier and safer.
