Don't geeks tend to use hexidecimal if it still sounds like decimal? So 51
is really only 33. Of course, I'm 2B, and that doesn't trick the non-geeks.
Anyway, happy birthday.

Q: Why do geeks get Christmas and Halloween mixed up?
A: Because 25 (dec) = 31 (oct).

Well, for the candles on our cakes, we generally use binary. Always 8

Binary is incomprehensible if it has never been explained to you,
and childishly simple if it has.
The numbering system that you are most familiar with
is the Decimal system, where the rightmost position
has a representative value of 1, and, working left,
each subsequent position has a representative value
which is 10 times the value of the position on its right.
Thus, from the right, you have the units position (1),
the tens position (1 * 10 = 10), the hundreds position
(10 * 10 = 100), the thousands position 100 * 10 = 1000),
etc., and we use the digits 0-9 at each position
to represent how many 1's, 10', 100's etc
are present in a given Decimal number.
Thus, the number two hundred and thirty-four (234)
is composed of (4 * 1) plus (3 * 10) plus (2 * 100).
This is the base 10 system you learned at a tender age.
Binary is similar, except it is simply a Base 2 system.
As with the Decimal system, the rightmost position
has a representative value of 1, but, working left,
each subsequent position has a representative value
which is only 2 times the value of the position on its right.
So, whereas the Decimal system positions represent
1, 10, 100, 1000, 10000 etc, the Binary system positions
represent 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 126, 256, 512, 1024 etc.
We only use the digits 0 or 1 at each position
to represent how many 1's, 2's, 4's, 8's, 16's, 32's etc
are present in a given Binary number.
So, taking Gary's Binary number 00110011, start at the right
and work left to calculate the Decimal equivalent,
which is (1 * 1) plus (1 * 2)
plus (0 * 4) plus (0 * 8)
plus (1 * 16) plus (1 * 32), which is his age, 51.

|
|
|
|
|
|
|
| Binary 110 is 6. Binary 1110 is 14. Binary 1100 is 12.
| Binary 10 is 2.
|
| The concept behind the Binary system is identical
| to the concept behind the Decimal system,
| yet many people don't understand it
| because the base is 2 instead of 10.
|
| It needs to be 2 because computers can have
| only two states. Magnetized or non-magnetized.
| On or off. Zero or One. It doesn't matter
| how you think of it. EVERY value in EVERY file

Is there a diff between 126 and 128??
I believe that daylight savings time starts in the USA at 2am tomorrow morning.
Cheers.

I think so, but Candlin may disagree.

How much are you dedicating to home renovation?
Archived from groups: microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion (More info?)
If that question was aimed at me, the renovations got put on hold until
May, until we get three publications off to the printer. They've been
coming along slowly but surely (the renovations.) Some trunk wiring to
be done and some carpet to be laid, a new stove to install and other
details. But the heavy work is pretty much finished--until the major
move, that is, which should be well under way by mid-May. Then it's time
to renovate *this* house before putting it on the market. Got a long
summer ahead of me.

Cool. I often use binary on birthday cakes too. But other geeks have been
offended at getting only an 8-bit cake, want something more modern, like a
32-bit cake. And I'm not willing to stick all those candles in, even if
they aren't lit!

(Would a 32-bit cake be bigger, have more pieces and therefore more bytes?)
Archived from groups: microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion (More info?)
Silly geeks! Anything that's based upon 32 bits is *Virtual*, not real.
Human bein's always operate in "Real Mode"
Of course, you could use DWord candle arrangements, but even in 8-bit
display, until they reach 128 years old, that last candle is only good
for parity.

I'm actually doing a "renovation", myself, but I think you must have
meant to query Terhune. Good to see you still are here, sf, taking a
well-needed break from the poisons of XP!
