I have windows media, quicktime and real on my system and
just lately my recent downloads have been freezing and
playing still images with garbled sound. My old downloads
seem fine.

If downloading from one particular site, I'd suspect that site
first. If not-

empty C:\Windows\Temp
empty the Temporary Internet Files cache (via IE - Tools - Internet options)
scan for viruses with up to date virus defintions

What are you using to do the download? IE?

Can you burn a test case to a CD or other removable media and check
it on another machine?

Are you seeing any problems with other downloads (such as *.zip or *.exe,
or even html or graphic files)?

I think you may have answered your own question. I don't use
any download managers or file "joiners" so, I can't advise on
those. Maybe somebody else can. Depending on the way the file
is linked you can usually just right-click on the link and do
a "Save target as.." (in IE) to download the whole file in one
piece. "Joining" two totally separate downloads, has got to
be tricky work, if it isn't one "piece of work" to begin with (?)

IOW, putting a media file back together, vs. appending one to
another, are different animals. In the latter case, format/version
differences of the file (for one) would be problematic, unless
the program can handle the decode of the medias, and then
encode them into one stream of the same version.

(?)

Considering that, you would probably be well advised to make sure
you always have the latest version of "Media Joiner", to keep up
with the latest versions of media files.

Is this the home page?

codec problems?
if the pirated(?) video you are watching was made with a later version of
the codec than you have installed, divx5.3 instead of divx4 then you can get
this. Look for "GSPOT CODEC APPLIANCE" one of many free utilities to tell
you what the stalling files were encoded with, and whether the version on
your system has a version late enough to play it. I got it here, but dont
trust me its always safer to look it up yourself
