My home computer is having problems so I've been trying to use my
games computer to connect to the internet so I can send the regular
one into the shop.

Its a pci modem and windows detects and installs the software just
fine. There are no conflicts shown in device manager. Under properties
it is shown to be on com 3 don't know which interupt.

When I run the modem diagnostic program it reports back that it
couldn't connect to the modem and that I should check the interupt.

Now I'm lost, I dont know how to find which interupt it's using, which
one it should be using or how to change them.

Please help before this computer bites the big one.

Oh I almost forgot, when I use the add new hardware wizard, it seems
to only look at com 1. I don't know if that's important.

Why are you running the diagnostic? Won't it connect to the net?
I'm not on a 98 machine at the moment but have a few thoughts:

To find out which IRQ is used while in Device Manager:
Check the Resources tab in the properties of the listed modem device.
or
Double click Computer and place a tic next to IRQ's. Some scrolling may be
needed to find the modem listed.

You may also want to check the BIOS and see if there is a setting assigning the
modem an IRQ to use.

Right click the NetworkNeighborhood icon on the Desktop, click Properties and
see if the modem is listed as a component. If it is make sure it's configured
properly. While there make sure your TCP/IP is configured properly as well.

Double-click the modem in Device Manager, select the "Modem" tab
and see if you have the option of using "COM2". Is so, select it and
click "OK".
