A friend's husband was where he shouldn't have been on the net. There
is no longer a dial up connection set to use. You can not set up a new
dial up or use the Internet Wizard to set up an internet connection.
In the add remove programs is listed %DosHereName% but it can't be
uninstalled. A search of the registry says no such entry exists.
On boot up there is a warning that there was a problem with running
CONFIGMG, a windows protection fault occurred and to restart the
computer, but, not every boot up. The computer will run in safe mode.

Windows 98se with all updates, upgrades, etc. from Microsoft. The
computer has Zone Alarm installed but it is not working now. Trying
to start it produces the big blue screen and it takes a reboot to
get out of that window. Spybot and AdAware are aldo installed but
neither find anything. AVG is installed but finds nothing either.
It is an Emachines 700mhz pc with 120 meg ram.

Any help appreciated...

Close barn door and look for gone horse? Kidding aside look at LSPfix
at this first url.

%DosHereName% reminds me of 95 TweakUI's right click and open a DOS Box
option string, the listing for Add/Remove Programs should be under this
key. Reinstall TweakUI?
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall]

Yes, %DosHereName% is the variable used in the DosHere.inf file to install the
Command Prompt Here PowerToy. It was supposed to show "Command Prompt Here
PowerToy" in the Add\Remove list, as that is what appears in the Strings section of
Doshere.inf. It does not seem to be relevant to the rest of the problems listed by
the OP, does it.

Copy anything you want to save to a floppy or CD, format the hard drive and
then refresh the machine from scratch. Do anything else and you take a risk
that whatever they installed on your PC will re-appear. You can fool around
for hours and hours, but the PC has probably been seriously compromised.
