I have a 512MB SD card for my iPaq 4155. I tried moving a few programs
(like CoolCalc and Unit Coverter) over to the storage card using File Explorer.
But when I try to open one of the programs under Start/Programs, it'll say
something like "Cannot open program file\Program Files\Unit converter Free\
unit.vb". Is there a way to change the path so I can run programs from the
storage card?

Thanks!

Try doing the same on your pc, you will get the same error!
You can not move windows applications one place to other, if you want you
first uninstall the application and reinstall it on your new location(that
is the general rule)
(but some applications might still work, so try opening your application by
clicking on the exe associated with the application you moved, if it runs
then edit your program launch short cut, right now its pointing to the wrong
location)

You need to reinstall each application you wish to run from a storage card.
Note that some applications do not run from a storage card.

Todd,

Yes, I now see that when installing a program on the PPC, it gives a choice about
where to install it...memory or storage card. So far, I've successfully reinstalled
Unit Converter and Ephemeris on my SD card. Cool!

Thanks!!

The OP may NOT need to reinstall each application. In almost all cases
you can manually move PPC applications anywhere you want and they'll
work fine. In a very few cases the application has hardcoded folder
names and cannot be put just anywhere--in my case just 1 out of 43. And
I've got a couple that have hooks into the bootup logic and don't work
correctly running from a card due to the card's longer initialization.

The only thing wrong is that the original shortcut is pointing at the
wrong location--the shortcut needs to be fixed either by deleting the
original and rebuilding the shortcut pointing at the correct location
(could be done via Activesync Explore but can also be done on the ppc
itself with a 3rd party utility like Resco File Explorer) or by editing
the existing shortcut and correcting the folder location (easy to do
Resco File Explorer).

Reinstalling the application, besides being a hassle, only gives you the
choice of installing into the ROOT directory of the storage card. Don't
know about others but I absolutely HATE having dozens of extra folders
hung off the root. You can create a "Program Files" folder on the card
and then move each application's folder below it. Then correct the
shortcut in \Windows\Start Menu to point to the right file. It's easy
and it's much much cleaner.

The one application that has a problem--would you believe the very pgm
the OP tried--Coolcalc 3.16s! It runs from the card but only if you
leave it's folder in the root--something hardcoded in it's subroutine
logic. Been intending to grab CABINSL and see if that can put it
somewhere else. Also in a couple of cases I think I did have to
reinstall to the card and THEN move the folder below Program Files.

Jud,

I purchased Resco File Explorer, and I figured out how to change the menu
shortcuts when moving programs. I also have CoolCalc 3.16, and I was able
to move it over to Storage Card\Program Files\CoolCalc\Applian.exe. The
program popped up the first time and asked me to enter the location where I've
moved the file to. Works fine ever since.

I was able to move Resco File Explorer over to Storage Card\Program Files,
(it worked), but no amount of tweaking the shortcut would allow Resco's Registry
Editor to work ("can''t find explorer.exe" ) Whether leaving it in main memory or
moving it to the storage card, I couldn't configure a proper shortcut for the
Registry program. So I uninstalled and reinstalled both programs and left them
in main memory. Any further ideas?

I sure like the idea of putting all non-critical programs on the storage card.

Thanks!
Scott

Jud,

Oops! I spoke too soon. After leaving the PPC off, it would no longer load
CoolCalc at the Storage Card\Program Files location, so I moved the program
back to the Storage Card root file...and now it works fine.

Jud,

Now it looks like CoolCalc doesn't like the Storage Card. After leaving my
PPC off and turning it on again, it can't find the program, even though the
shortcuts look good. So I reinstalled CoolCalc into Main Memory, and it's
working fine there.

It seems to be a strange beast. I also got the "where'd you move me"
question--and like you it didn't help. I DID get it to work in a folder
in the storage card root--it might have been one of the apps I had to
"install" to the card instead of just moving it.

I've got an *ancient* Casio EM500--it only has 16MB of main memory
*total* so I have to put everything I possibly can on the card--wish I
could move Agenda Fusion (it's huge). One of these days I'll upgrade--
still waiting on the *right* combo pda-phone but don't like the current
crop. The one I'd like would be something like the Lenovo ET560
http://msmobiles.com/news.php/1905.html
Small like a smartphone but with touchscreen, memory card and other
advantages of pocketpc.

Jud,

While CoolCalc didn't work on the storage card, I did get Resco File
Explorer and Registry pgm to work properly on the storage card--in the
root file. And so it goes.
