Computer was working fine, nothing new installed, laptop used strictly for
work. I have never experienced any problems until today.

My computer will not Startup...I can see the 'dots' going across the startup
screen, but it just reboots, over and over.

I have tried pressing 'f8' after post screen and before startup screen but
have not been able to access it. I have spoken to tech friend who advised I
will be able to startup with xp or recovery cd that came with computer, but
that I will lose all my work! I was on the road, so haven't been able to back
up my very important files, is there any way I can recover those files or are
they gone?

Any help will be appreciated.

have you tried to use the cd again on startup and then
activate the active recovery?

David--

Are you by any chance using XP SP2? What version are you using? The reason
that's on point is that there is an issue with XP SP2 with a certain driver.
I'll link two KBs that might help you, and the second one I should have
included may help you recover if you have XP SP2 or Tablet PC Edition 2005:

After you install Windows XP Service Pack 2, your computer restarts
continuously

How to use the Automatic Recovery feature to recover your computer if the
Windows XP Service Pack 2 Setup program is not completed successfully
