I use a Danish keyboard

my programs, including Windows 98SE, are in English

however, the right click menus available from the top bar or in the corners
of all programs (top left and right) which serve to minimize, maximize, or
close programs, as well as the help descriptions associated with the - x and
box icons,
all appear in Danish

why?

can I (and how?) change this to English?

Menu text, error messages, etc., are generated by the OS and fixed by
the language of that OS installation. If I'm reading you correctly, the
only way to not have Danish text in those locations is to install an
English version of Windows 98. Windows XP has "multi-language" versions,
and maybe Windows 2000, also, but not any earlier versions of Windows.

Thanks

the Windows 98SE vesion I have is already the English version (not Danish),
that's why it's so strange that these little menus appear in Danish (all
other drop-down menus (in all programs and also Windows) appear correctly (in
English)

any further ideas?

Sorry about that. Didn't quite grasp what you were talking about.

The buttons themselves, at top right of windows, are provided by
Marlett.ttf. But you're only talking about the little balloons called
something like "Screen Tips" (that appear when you hover the mouse over
an item) and right-click context menus for windows title bars?

Have you installed *any* Danish software, including support for the
keyboard? Any IE multi-language support?

re keyboard:

in control panel, keyboard properties default language/layout is Danish

config.sys says :
device=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\display.sys con=(ega,,1)
Country=045,850,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\country.sys

autoexec.bat says:
mode con codepage select=850
c:\>keyb dk,, C:\windows\command\keyboard.sys

but that's all necessary and normal as far as I understand

In IE under language preference nothing is installed, it says "menus and
dialog boxes are currently displayed in English (US)."

I also use Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird (both in English), but nothing
there to set regarding languages

I do have programs in Danish versions (e.g. Word and Excel, but completely
separate installations/versions from the US Word and Excel versions)

It's not only those little Screen Tips balloons from hovering over top right
corner minimize/maximize/close icons that appear in Danish, but also the
drop-down menus that you get from right-clicking on the top bar or on the
Windows icon in the top left corner

I think Don has probably suggested the answer, here. And I'm not sure
that anything is going to fix that short of a reformat/reinstall. Might
*try* IE Repair and/or reinstall IE. Only thing I can think of that
might remedy the situation by overwriting the appropriate files.

Win98 was designed to work only in a single language,
fixed by the language of the OS. Problems have been
reported by installing anything at all in a second, different
language (e.g. German-language AOL software has been
reported to overwrite part of the Win98 English repertoire.)

thanks all
you're probably right, I'll just live with it
certainly not enough of a problem to reinstall ......

one more (stupid) question (not being used to this forum):
when replying, how does one avoid that ALL previous posts are included every
time?

well, looks like I just figured it out
erasing seems to be the answer .....
