Ok, so I plan to build a new PC once the Conroe is released (assuming HOPEFULLY the new gen vid cards are out by then as well) So here is what i think will go in it and any advice is much appreciated with what i think the parts cost in bold. Thanks

CPU: Conroe E6700 2.67Ghz 530
Heatsink: Zalman CNPS9500 60
Video: Next Gen ATI/Nvidia (not sure which,
but thinking nvidia overcloked through eVGA) 550
RAM: 2 x 1GB (crucial?) 200
Audio: Creative XFi XtremeMusic 100
HD's: WD740 Raptor 74GB (for OS/Games) 150
another WD ~200 GB SATA HD (storage) 100
DVD Writer: Lite-on 60
Mouse: Logitech G7 60
Keyboard: MS Ergo4000 70
case: not sure yet but ~100
PSU: 550 Enermax ~150
MB: not sure yet but ~120

So overall i think the system should cost around $2200, think that is good for that system? also what would you change/add

P.S. Hoping to have all parts available by mid August

Well being it that half of the components aren't out yet, and when they are out the others are going to be out of date or replaced with something better, there's no way to tell.

It's just too early.

I would spend my time looking for cases at this point. Its about the only thing on your list you can commit to buying at this stage. Well that and your topend budget.

Only time will tell what will be the right purchase in august/september. Heck AMD might drop the prices on their chips so much they are the better deal even if they are a bit slower.

Whos to say that by August a new round of video cards are going to be on the market? With Vista pushed back they could wait to release them later on closer to Christmas

Who ever said it was bad to have a wish list :) that's the point of calling it a "wish" list. Anyway, yes, I understand that the dates of the conroe release and the dates of the new generation graphics arent set yet but nobody said it was for sure after vista. I dont have a wealth of knolwedge in the subject but I would find it hard to believe that nvidia and ati will wait to launch until after vista. Wouldnt it be somewhat odd to think that they dont already have a strong base of dx10 by now to build the new cards around? Just because MS pushes back the vista date doesnt mean ati & nvidia have to do the same.

It's still too early, I mean the most crucial parts that people would actually say something about is the Video/Processor and both of them aren't out yet.

its like "who came first, the chicken or the egg" in a weird way.... cause you cant run directX10 on vista without a DX10 card, but then if what you say is true, you cant have a DX10 card till vista is released. For that very reason I woudl believe that there is enough known to get kickin on the DX10 cards. As others have stated too, it could just be that DX10 is supported but not bug free on the first round of cards/drivers

Ok how about the above system now, now all it assumes is the conroe, i replaced the next gen video card with the current Gen ATI 1900XTX

Except the 1900XTX is a ripoff. Buy the 1900XT and overclock it. Your wallet will be much happier to.

Great, so now we just have a CPU that's gonna be out around August (??? correct me if I'm wrong ???).

Dude, my point still stands - by the time your CPU is released, you're gonna want more RAM (in anticipation of Vista gaming), there will be a new Creative sound card out, bigger, faster hard drives....

It's impossible to design a system that's not gonna be out for ages, even with one component.

Err, well Vista and DX10 are pretty far up each others asses and so I don't really see DX10 cards coming out before Vista, do you?
Unlikey. 8xxx and 6xx cards will probably come after Vista anyway, because they've just released 7900 and X1900, so after Vista seems most logical.

Didn't ATI come out with the 9700 prior to DX9? what makes you think they wont do it again with DX10

Because DX9 wasn't so intrinsically linked to a specific operating system in the way DX10 is to Vista. MS realises there isn't much to attract gamers to Vista, so they're making DX10 Vista-only - and bringing out DX10 cards so many months before they can actually be used doesn't make sense.

I see what you're saying, but it's a much different situation because of the V-Factor.

That argument makes sense as well. However, wouldn't it also make sense to have the cards come out pre-vista release so that DX 10 can bu used right away when you purchase vista. with them released after, you would have to wait to use dx10 unless they both launched on the exact day. I assume they can have the cards run dx9 for a bit until dx10 is out.

Yup but wouldn't it make more sense for nVidia/ATi if they released their DX10 cards after Vista, so that people are so hungry for DX10 they can charge whatever they like

I'm just speculating here - but Vista>DX10 cards seems like the order things are going in. Others are saying that nVidia are working on some sort of release schedule and that the 8000 cards are coming out this summer, but I think that's not true because of the aforementioned V-factor.

Wait, i think i just finally realized something you said and feel stupid for not knowing this before. But is it true DX10 is vista ONLY? In other words, all these new games utilizing the new DX will be on vista only (well except for maybe a less graphical DX9 version?)

Just had another thought. So if DX10 is vista only, and i wont be upgrading to vista until probably Summer '07, would i be making a stupid move to just buying a current gen video card in august with conroe, such as the Saphire 1900XTX Blizzard? I mean, no point in waiting for the DX 10 video cards if i wont even be using DX10 (that was my primary reason for waiting for them)

Well it looks that way. Unfortunately for us end-users big companies don't all adhere to some sort of synchronised timeframe - so release of Conroe, AM2, ATi + nVid next-gen graphics and Vista are being released sporadically over the course of this coming year.

Vista really doesn't have anything to offer gamers, so they're stuffing DX10 into Vista and Vista only. Windows XP was miles better as an OS than Windows ME, which attracted everyone to that. However, few gamers are going to be impressed by the AeroGlass interface alone.

It may be worth you getting a DX10 card before getting Vista. I was discussing with some others elsewhere a while ago about DX9 compt on the new cards, however we decided that any performance hit by not being a dedicated DX9 card will all be made up by the fact that the new cards are going to be much faster.

so long as my card (presumably 1900XTX can play current games up to Crysis (winter '06) on full i will be happy waiting until summer of 07 to buy the next gen video card with vista.

Well, GRAW demo just finished downloading so time to play...
