Hi,
have a Dell Dimension XPS GEN4 3.5Mhz system with 1GB ram. In that system is the Radeon 850XT platinum. The driver installed is the Catalyst 5.5

My question is the following: When playing many games that detects the best settings for my system, they almost always come back with a setting of 1024x768 and no anti-aliasing.
Further, if i change to say 1280x1024 and 2x anti-aliasing, i often see poor or choppy performance in the games (like Dawn Of War or Oblivion).

Why is this?

A follow up question: i downloaded and installed the Catalyst 6.4 drivers but it still selects the same medium settings when determining the best settings for my system. HOWEVER, now ANYTIME i play ANY games, within in minutes, it warns me that the cpu is overheating.

Can anyone assist me with solving these issues?

An X850XT will not be able to play Oblivion on max with anti aliasing and decent fps. Update your drivers.

As stated, updating thd driver doesn't seem to be so easy. the updated Catalyst drivers for X850 apparently causes an overheating warning shortly after starting any game.
I also noticed that the Demo of Rise of Legend looks like EGA graphichs...damn, this card must really stink these days.

The X850 isn't high end anymore, it won't be able to play Oblivion at great settings decently. Also, Pentium 4's run very hot, and the matter is worsened by the terrible air flow of Dell's cases, which is why it tells you that your CPU is overheating.

The X850 Is still high end. It beats the nVidia 7800GTX in Far Cry. AND if you put on AA and AF in BF2 it beats the nVidia 7800GTX too. Take a look here, see that they used catalyst 5.10.

I have the X850XTPE in my other computer, I recently used the latest Omega Drivers for it, smoothed out a few little bugs on it.

Also I use the older control panel not CCC, need to download and install seperatly

My old setup was the following.

Dell Dimension 8300
3.2 Extreme Edition CPU
3Gig ddr 400 memory
X850XT PE AGP
6.2 Drivers using ATI TRAY TOOL!

I could run all the latest games besides Fear and Oblivion with 2-4AA and 8-16AF with 1280X1024 res and get great frame rates.

I played Oblivion in 1152X864 NO-AA 8XAF with all sliders at 75% except for Specular (50%) and Exterior Shadows (40%). I used Canopy shadows, No Self Shadows, No Grass Shadows, and Water on High detail with ripples.

I used the grass Ini tweak and thinned out the grass to 110 which is still plenty thick.

With these settings I got 65+FPS inside dungeons and I averaged around 40 FPS outside with the lowest dropping to 28-30FPS when around foilage and trees.

The X850XT PE can still hold its own in the hands of the right person 8)

i've tried the 6.2 drivers, and still, the ati control panel, it complains of overheating. the only driver that seems to work for me is 5.5.
the 5.5 does not have the Catalyst Control Center software, so i'm wondering if that might be the issue?
