I have a machine I upgrade to SE because I thought you could have USB 2.0
support with it. I downloaded the Windows 98 Unofficial Service Pack from
http://www.usbman.com/win98seusbguide.htm and installed it. It's a Lexar
Sports JumpDrive (1 GB) that I'm trying to get to work. I also installed
the Win 98 drivers supplied by Lexar. But I can't seem to get an "enhanced
USB" device to show up in device manager. Oddly enough, I have an older
Lexar Jumpdrive that doesn't require USB 2.0. If I boot up with it in,
it'll show up. Then I can remove it and plug in the new one and it will
read it.
This is a Compaq Presario 5062 - 128MB ram, 333Mhz processor.
This is the first time I've ever tried doing this, so I'm a relative
"newbie" to the USB thing... :-)
What do I try next?

In order to have USB 2.0 support, besides having Win98SE and Win98 drivers for the
device in question, you must also have a USB 2.0 port. A Compaq Presario of the
333MHz vintage is only going to have USB 1.1 ports. To gain USB 2.0 ports, you must
install a PCI card that has USB 2.0 ports, and install its drivers to add the
Enhanced USB Controller. Then you should be able to use the USB 2.0 jumpdrive at
USB 2.0 speed, when plugged into those new USB 2.0 ports. Ya follow me? :-)

To clarify what Glee is saying, simple rule. You need (1) the hardware
first (USB 2.0 Enhanced Controller), then (2) the software to drive it, in
that order. This cannot be overemphasized.

Hardware is somethng you can see, touch, feel, and taste if you like.
Software is ambiguous to human senses.

Yep, I follow you. I was afraid that was going to be the answer. Come to
think of it, I have installed those cards for other people. I must be
getting senile... :-)
Thanks!

You're wrong !

Hardware is that which you can touch.
Software is that which keeps you in a sitting position for 30 years.
