Hi all,
sorry, this post is a little lengthy!
ive recently purchased a couple of Western Digital 80gb 7200rpm 8mb cache SATA drives and set them up for striping on my nForce 4 SATA RAID controller. I use Diskeeper for defragmentation and they claim that RAID 0 setups benefit greatly from defragmentation with their product.
Ive been researching defragmenting on RAID 0 but i cant seem to find definitive articles about defragmentation with this kind of setup. I am not sure if the defragmenter is actually doing the job properly since the drives obviously appear as one logical unit to Windows while the data is split across multiple disks.
Another point i was thinking about is that the RAID controller might already be making the most effiective use of the physical sectors on the drives, and i have actually made things worse by defragging
I tried some tests in HDTach, and while the overall results were very impressive the graph jumped up and down a lot throughout the test, suggesting an erratic sustained transfer speed.
So.. my question: Will defragmentation really make a difference on this RAID 0 array, and if not have i degraded performance by trying :?:
Thanks in advance!
