I was wondering which card is the better one. I could get the x1800xtx with 512mb of ram on it, while the 7900gt has 256mb. Which one should i get? I can use two 7900gt's in the future if I buy another one, but can i use 2 x1800xtx's?

Dont you mean the x1900xtx?

no, the 1900xtx is to expensive right now for me. I don't know which one is better the 1800xtx or the 7900gt. I looked at some benchmarks and saw that the 7900gt sli was way better than 1800xtx. But I thought I saw that the 1800xtx was better than only one 7900gt.

Depends on your motherboard, whether it is SLI Crossfire to use two video cards. Either way, buying two video cards is retarded.
If you plan on extreme overclocking, the 7900gt will pull ahead with voltage mods. If not, a single X1800XT should beat a single 7900gt.

Ok, sounds good. I will probably be getting the x1800xtx then. I just got kinda confused at first, I thought the 7900gt would be better just because it was newer, but i guess im wrong.

Could you provide a link to the x1800xtx please.

The confusion seems to be coming from an extra X. There is no X1800XTX. There is a X1800XT 256MB, X1800XT512MB, and a X1800XT platinum edition that I have seen digit-life review, but have not seen any for sale.

Anyway, since you mention Oblivion and Fear, the ranking is easy:

1)X1900XT
2)X1800XT 512MB
3)X1800XT 256MB($260AR newegg)
4)7900GT

7900GT is a great card but not the choice for Oblivion.

What about overclocking though ? With a voltmod a 7900gt should blow an x1800 away correct?

Yeah, if you want to physically alter your card, the 7900 will overclock much better.

Then again, the X1800s are decent overclockers to be sure, and you can change voltage ion software... leaving your warranty intact...

warranties are for n00bs.

Sure the 7900GT's overclocking potential makes an already great card even better. But if FS OC'ed a 7900GT to insane levels, I still don't see it topping the X1800XT in this test: http://www.firingsquad.com/hardwar [...] /page5.asp

it could, but only by a very close margin. the 7900gt isn't good on a shader intensive game like that regardless though.

Pretty amazing. But keep in mind I gave a specific link to Oblivions most demanding outdoor areas, which in FS's testing is handled much better by the ATI X1x00 cards. I'm not saying acrros the board in all games, or even across the board in Oblivion. Just looking at the most stressful area in that test which is important because it what will determine the playable settings for the card in Oblivion. (ie. If you tweak the game for indoors or even in a town, be prepared to lower those settings when getting out in those foliage areas).

Anyway, Just look at the numbers again:

12x8:
X1800XT 28.6
7900GTX 24.6
7900 GT 17.2

The 7900GT would have to beat out the 7900GTX by over 16% just to match the X1800XT in that one. Huge task considering the X1800XT is starting out 66% ahead of it. Shoot even at 10x7 it's a 48% lead at stock speeds.

I'm not ragging on the 7900GT at all as it trades blows with the X1800Xt. I just think for Oblivion the pecking order is clear. At least given the current drivers.

ok there is no x1800xtx its just xt

The reason it handles oblivion better is simple ati has better vertex an shader operations and better memory bandwith just look at this. Also clock speed is higher.

How long did those extreme lag situations last? I personally don't mind SOME lag provided it is quick and goes away and doesn't kill my gameplay experience. Why is Oblivion so intensive? I mean, an X1900XTX getting under 50 FPS is just unacceptable for a game, and WHEN ITS AT 12X10!

Reply to ak47is1337

It doesn't look to be a case of lag. Just steady low fps in some areas of the game. Look at the X1800XT at 12x10. it averaged 28.6, but the min framerate was 26 and max 35. So they obviously tested a very demanding steady area.

I have found the same thing at the settings I play at. It's rarely a case of fps that jump around, but rather just sit low in some areas. In the stressful areas outdoors and around oblivion gates my fps will just sit in the mid 20's. I'm not happy about it, but it is playable. Oblivion is just a beast as I had been playing 10x7 medium with the 6800U and could barely raise anything with the 7800GT.

So overall which one is a better card?

Depends on whether or not you want to mod your 7900gt, and what games you are playing.

Simple shader heavy then its ati. Pixel and texture heavy then it's nvidia.

Yeah! You said it, man!

Returning a broken card for a new one is for chumps!

Reply to Cleeve

I just get newegg to replace things when they break. =)

Does that mean you're a noob?

if I turn on everything, and run @ 1280x1024 my machince cuts through it, with no lag at all. The fact is though, that while it is smooth and looks good the fps are easily under 50. I have modded the game to allow even better textures at distance and increased shadow and object distance (tweakguides.com is great) just to push my card as hard as it can...

...and it does. Oblivion is demanding, and the 1900 is almost identical in architecture to the chip in the xbox360, which the game was designed for.

as good as it is though, faces and lip-synching is better on HL2 (no self-shadowing but better overall), and the fact that the game does not use anistropic filtering at all is just retarded. w/o the mods i have used the distance textures look just dumpy. But once you unlock the stuff "hidden" the game looks stinkin amazing and the trees, grass and shadowing is why it is so taxing.

if you play Oblivion... which I do not see on the OP, but the link someone gave had that... then ati is the way to go. Not only is performance better but you get HDR + AA (w/ a patch) that Nv just can't do.

"Oblivion is quite possibly the first game we've ever benchmarked where having multiple GPUs is almost necessary to get good frame rates at relatively common resolutions with most of the impressive visual effects turned on. The performance offered by a pair of X1900 XTs simply can't be matched by any single card, but as good of a game as Oblivion is you'd have to have a pretty serious computer budget to accommodate the $1200 that a pair of X1900 CrossFire GPUs will set you back."

while I agree that duals would do better, mine does respectable w/ all turned on. So I would not say that it is required as such... still very sweet engine.

Reply to sojrner

You all are just silly to think the 1800XT could beat a 7900GT (other than maybe oblivion as you say).

I swear, TOMS is full of ATI and AMD fans only...

Reply to p05esto

wow, according to that article (bad grammar and all) the 7900 gt superclock is "probably the fastest single slot card available"...

...I simply did not know that, amazing!

having that sli'd 6800gs slide into the farcry testing only proves it!
