This guy isolated the controlls to the read write head, hooked them up to his speakers. Added a laser pointer and some mirrors and created a laser oscilloscope from a dead hard drive.
I already posted this url in another, but the laser oscilloscope build is so cool it deserves its own post.
Unfortunately there is no way I could pull this off, I can barely solder and I can't recognize even the simplest circuit. Makes me wish I went for the EE degree instead of CIS.
