I had a Palm Desktop Software Program - I got a new Palm and installed the CD
with it - it was supposed to upgrade the previous program and no uninstall
was necessary (I am using 2 palms - Zire 21 & 31 - with the program with 2
user names).

I had trouble with the program and now I guess I have really messed it up -
The program does not work - I can open it but no data can be entered (illegal
operation error pops up) - I used the "Windows Installer CleanUp Utility"
also and now the program is still on my desktop, it is NOT in the add/remove
programs yet the properties show it is located at C:program files/Palm... -
there is no program for Palm in the Program files. HELP!!

It is very likely that the icon on your Desktop pointing to the Palmware is
simply a shortcut to the now missing program, which the Uninstaller did not
remove. If so, delete it, or move it off the desktop until you are
satisfied, eg., to a new C:\AAA folder.
Confirm that the program is truly uninstalled, and reinstall it to a
different folder, and test. The original folder may still have personal
information files which might be copied to the new program folder and be
usable.

I have used Microsoft Cleanup Utility - Palm is not there
I went to add/remove - Palm is not there
I went to "find" and removed any related files (except internet shortcuts)
I deleted the icons on my desktop
I restarted my computer
I got a flashlight stating that it was looking for hotsync.exe
I cancelled that and put in my CD and it again told me that the software was
installed and skipped that step.
HELP!!

hotsync.exe: Look in the start up points and delete the reference to
hotsync.exe. Programs are generally started on boot from the start up
folder on the start menu, the load= and run= lines in the win.ini and these
registry run keys:

1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

2. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

4. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

5. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ RunServices

6. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
RunServicesOnce

7. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
RunOnce\Setup

There is a freeware program that makes this process a lot easier to manage:
Startup Manager, http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/toolbox/startupcpl/

Open the registry editor (rededit.exe) and do a find on: Palm. When you
come to an entry that appears to pertain to the Palm software, back it up
first and then delete it. To back up an entry, click file and export. This
will create a .reg file in a location of your choice (suggest the desktop)
that will reset the registry as it was should a problem occur. After
deletion, click F3 to continue the search.

Well, I got rid of the "flashlight" looking for hotsync.exe, and I went to
the regedit and deleted the Palm there (local machine, software, palm) but
when I try to install the program anew, I get a blip of the page where it is
to be installed and the program goes straight to a page that states the Palm
is already installed and gives additional programs to install.
Did I miss a step I should have taken?

There is most likely a reference in the registry to the software and you
need to find and delete it using the method I described. You must continue
the search after deleting a reference--use the F3 key.
