Can log onto net but cannot access anything

Hi all

My friend recently got an old pc for his boy to learn with & to also help
with his education by using the net...

unfortunately, something has since been twiddled with or deleted, I hazzard
to guess?

I was told they were having trouble with their internet...

I had a quick look at it yesterday & found IE 6 had mostly disappeared, so I
simply reinstalled it from a cd I had handy,

Now it appears that the pc can log onto the net with the internal 33kb modem
without any probs besides being obviously slow...

But OE v6 cannot access the mail servers to get any emails, I checked the
usual settings, names, passwords etc all seems in good order, but still no
joy...

Further more, I also found that IE v6 cannot access any pages at all
neither.... not a single one... !

The pc had been accessing the net & mail servers totally fine up until
now.... ?


Is there any other settings that may need checking that could cause this
strange occurence ?

any ideas would certainly help as I am totally out of them.... !

There may be some setting that needs changing, but I would first make sure my
WIN98 is in good order as well as you did your IE. Assuming you have
installed or reinstalled a "clean" operating system, then check your
"security settings" and cookie settings. But from what you described, It
almost sounds like a POP3 server problem with your internet service provider
if you are getting nothing at all. If so, you can either go through the
connection settings yourself or call them to walk you through it. That is
much as I know anyway.

I did reinstall 98se over the top as my first attempt at solving this, that
didn't help though, I have got a feeling that I will need to do a 'clean'
install to get round this one, it may be best... the ISP used is tiscali,
they use a premium rate number, so maybe I will hit the tiscali forum as a
last resort before I clean the drive
