Well....I finally got the nerve to take my yoke apart.
(I know Crash and Varmit....I know....it took me long enough!)
It was starting to make strange noises, so I figured it needed some
cleaning on the inside.
I unscrewed all 6 screws, unscrewed the two clamps and that's when it
happened. The two nuts that hold the clamps in place have now fallen deep
inside the interior of the yoke and the yoke itself doesn't wanna be opened
and this means I can't use the yoke until everything is back the way it
was.
BUT....for some reason the yoke won't open!!
Is there some "hidden" trick I need to bypass in order to open the damn
thing? Without damaging it!!

Did you get the two screws that are hidden under the rear rubber feet?

Now you've done it!
If the two nuts fall into the interior they will destroy the fragile
electronics by cracking the ceramic gate arrays!

Just kidding :-)
Like Chris T said, there are 8 screws... two hidden under the rubber feet
on the back side of the unit. Remove the last 2 screws and flip the unit
right side up and lift the top off. Watch out, don't break the wires to the
throttle on the top unit, just fold the top over and alongside the bottom
unit. Pick a big flat space to do all this.
Clean the shaft with alcohol then re-lubricate it. Try to get the "shaft
collars" (the 2 rings around the shaft) clean on their insides.
It's a good idea to glue the nuts into their retainer so they don't fall out
again.
To reassemble it, plug it in and test it with the cover off to make sure it
all works, it's only 5 volts and not dangerous. The usual mistake is not
putting the elevator axis post back into the channel before you screw it all
back together. Look at my photograph to get a general idea of what I'm
talking about.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/ [...] CHYoke.jpg
If it all works, put the screws back in. If the rubber feet are still very
sticky... good... just stick them back on. If you got them dirty and they
lost their sticky just a tiny bit of a rubbery type of cement. - rubber
cement is excellent - because you might have to take it apart again.
PS Don't use an electric screw driver! The screw sockets strip very easily
because the plastic is cheap.

Nice, is it also easy to open the pedals from CH to clean the inside?
Main collected some dust, I would like to open and clean them, but I'm

Caution, if you are going to lube it , do not use anything with
petroleum, in it will destroy the plastic parts in the yoke. The best
stuff I have found is a dry spray called Liquid Wrench Dry Lube. Some
Liquid wrench products are petro based, so be careful about which one
you get. If you can't find this lube, a silicon spray will work also.

Unplugging the connector on the levers is also a good option.
This gave me a little more room to work in.
I took the whole thing apart, cleaned it, reassembled it and tested it.
No problemo! Everything works.

Almost forgot the elevator axis.
I looked inside once more before closing it and then noticed something that
looked to have no particular function....that was the elevator axis. :-)

The plastic is cheap, but the rest sure ain't.
Thanks for the back-up, guys (and the tip about screw 7 and 8).
I now have a clean and properly functioning yoke and it's good for yet

The thing I hate about my CH yoke is that it doesn't return to
fore/aft center. I have to tap it one way or the other. I wish it
would just go to center when you let go of it from either direction,
just like a real yoke. I've fooled around with the null zones, trying
to get the elevators to correspond. Anyone found a good solution?

Odd.
My hotmail inbox holds 250MB and only 1 per cent was used.
Sending a URL is easy: open the page, highlight the address in the
addressbar, copy the address with CTRL C into an e-mail and paste it with
CTRL V.
So post it here and share it with your mates, mate.

Mine does just fine... so it's not all of them.
Only three things it could be:

Thanks, it was this way out of the box. I thought that's just the way
it worked, since it's sort of cheap looking plastic, etc. I'll have to
dismantle it & clean it. I don't think I can return it, I've had it

Out of the box? I seem to remember someone saying the USB yokes had a return
to center problem.. (mine is gameport)
That would seem to indicate springs that are too long. Personally, I would
shorten the springs.
How? Do it only if you are really mechanically inclined and good with this
sort of stuff because if the modification goes south, you've hosed your yoke
until you can find replacement springs.
Basically, you cut the first loop in the spring in the same place on both
springs and then use a needle nose pliers to bend and fashion a new hook.
Proceed with caution. :-)

I had a CH USB yoke right after they were introduced, and NEVER could get
the elevator axis to work smoothly, due mainly to sloop from sloopy
engineering and plastic parts. Around the center position it was like
having an extra trim tab, just put it where you wanted it, and it'd stay
there. Had it on eBay within 60 days and sold my first born into slavery
for a PFC. Had a CH pro pilot before that, that had to have the shaft
planed down slightly every few years, don't know if the shaft swelled, or
the bushing shrunk, but at least it was fixable...... Others have reported
good luck with various solutions, but I never was so lucky.....

What is it this week: pick on the Dutchman?
I'll have all of you know that the yoke was taken apart completely,
thoroughly cleaned and then completely reassembled.
And, obviously to everyone's amazement (including my own <g> ), all of its
functions are operable.
Now I may not be an engineer or an electronics expert, like most of you
former geeks, but the darn thing works. So do my computers, which I built
myself. Not bad for a Dutchman, I like to think.
So let me sit here in pride for the remainder of the week, which will keep
the little white devil happy and quiet also.
Besides...I know better than to take an Aussie and a Texan (sorry boB)
seriously. And I can sure spot a trap when I see one, fellas. ;-)

No worries. I'm just a trans-planted West Virginian, even though I left
there in September 1970.
