ATI questions

I need some help..
Things we do for love, i've given my wife my gaming machine so she can play oblivion the system I gave her is a Intel p4 3.0, 1gb ddr 400, Nvidia 6800GT 256mb 1gb memory, Audigy Sc.

Now I started building my own system and hadto skimp on my graphics card as you can see.

Motherboard Asus Model P5GD2-X (bios 0601 beta)
Intel 3.4 ghz processor
Memory aries 533mhz DDR2 2GB
350gb Sata drive.
club3d ATI Radeo X800rx PCI express 256mb ddr3 (catalyste V 6.3
(on board HD sound with Surround sound head phones 5.1)
Direct X v 9c

THe club3d graphics card was the only part I am not really happy with. would have liked to get another nvidia 6800 but couldn't spare the extra for a pci e model (club3d card was a bargain at about $55)

Main issue im having is in Half life 2 and Doom3 at 1280 * 1024 i get chopiness when moving

Now im not use to ATI cards or tweaking them this is a system with no overclocking.

Firstly Any advice on how to tweak this new system, get the best performance.
I am not looking for 1600*1200 playability lol

I have maybe 130$ to spend on a GC if this one is a lemon, but thats my limit.

Choppiness? Do you mean video lag? or frame rate dip?

Obviously running Doom3 on that GPU @ 1280x1024 with some settings at least on medium might get choppy occasionally.

HL2 ran like butter @ 1600x1200 on my X800pro (stock) so that resolution should be more than playable with that card.

Well, did you previously have a Nvidia GPU installed? Its possible you could be experiencing driver conflictions. Run driver cleaner, then re-install the latest catalyst's or Omegas (whatever your preference may be)
then let us know your findings.

This is a completely new system i've built no nvidia software near it.

How best to describe it, fps is fine but its like its having problems writing the whole screen as you move around I see lines of the last frame and jaged edges

Im also seeing it on other games now i just hadn't installed any other fps's
