I subscribe to a website that operates on an extensive Java applet,
and found that some parts didn't display properly - mainly long
lines being truncated. The support guy there said I needed to
install the Sun version of Java, which I did. And that indeed did
solve the truncation problem I had been having.
But it also brought a number of other problems that I had not
experienced with the MS builtin Java:
Portions of the screen not redrawing, leaving them black.
General problems with overlaying windows not displaying right - not
on top, strange vertical black lines, etc.
Everything is very jerky and blinky and slow.
Clicking on the X at the upper right to close a minor window
immediately shuts down ALL windows, dumps me off the site
completely, and dumps an error log on my desktop.
Well, I finally uninstalled Sun Java and everything is back to
normal, but still with truncated lines.
I'm still running IE 5.5 SP2, and I wonder if upgrading to 6.0 would
make any difference in the way Java stuff works - either the ML
version or in the way the Sun version works. Or is there anything
else I can do to improve things?
I can't upgrade to XP on this computer, and am not ready to spring
for a new one, so I'm looking for a way to make this work if that's
possible.
Frankly, I'm a bit surprised that the Sun Java performed so poorly.
I would have expected it to work better than MS.

Java is java - the browser won't make any difference as to how it works.
You didn't tell us what version of the Sun JVM you loaded - 1.4.2 is the
last major release and 5.0 is the current release. If you have an older
version than 1.4.2 you should uninstall it and upgrade to at least the 1.4.2
version; if you have one of these two versions you should uninstall it and
install the other version as a test.
You must uninstall the prior version before installing a different one
because Sun Java will happily run with multiple active versions - bad news
in and of itself. ;-(

The version I installed is 1.5.0.2, which is the latest as
far as I know. I didn't see anything about 1.4.2 on the
Java site. Where would I find that?

Never mind. I found it on the Java website. I've already
uninstalled 1.5, so I'll install 1.4.2 and see if it works any
better.

Good enough - if you still have problems drop back by. No guarantees but
we'll do what we can.

I installed 1.4.2.08, and so far it works fine. None of the
glitches I had with 1.5.
I think the problem is going to be that the old versions of
Sun Java had a major security problem that was fixed only in
1.5. If so, I'll have to hope they eventually get 1.5
working with 98SE.
Anyway, thanks very much for the help.
