I recently had windows crash to an unrecoverable condition: I could get the
DOS prompt but not safe mode. After downloading and running a boot disk, I
was able to reinstall windows and every thing seems fine, exept Internet
Explorer. When I dial, the IE window shows but then indicates an error and
asks if I want to send an error report. Regardless of response, the error
repeats and the window ultimately closes. If I run windows update from the
start menu, a get the familiar "cannot connect to server" error. The dial up
connection is made, however.

The currently installed IE version is 6.0. Should I uninstall it and then
re-install the earlier version from the Windows98 disk?

I would go into Add/Remove Programs, select Internet Explorer and click the
Remove button, then have IE completely reinstall (not repair) over itself.
This option should be available unless you've screwed up the IE versions by
reinstalling in which case you may need to uninstall and then reinstall.
