OVERCLOCKING THE OPTERON 170
How much can i overclock this suckers at a max stable clock speed?
How much should i raise voltage and multiplier? to get it at a speed of 2.6, 2.8, or 3.0 if possible and stable? or should i just go with an FX-60.

Unfortunately no one knows how well any particular Opty 170 will overclock - its all pot luck. The thing with Opterons is that they are more likely to overclock well compared with the equivilant Athlon 64's.

I did some research on the web around various 'steppings' i.e. the wafer that each batch of opterons comes from to gauge approximately what stepping was more likely to overclock well - i then decided on stepping "0546 XPMW" and it achieves 2.6Ghz on stock volts running very cool indeed (see my Sig).

I have pushed it to 2.8 with 1.5V but don't think at the minute the increase in temp is worth the increase in clock speed (plus I'm being lazy and can't be bothered to wait 24hrs for prime 95 to see if its stable at 2.8!).

Some people have had alot of luck with 0550 XPMW's but its worth hunting around in Google for "opteron 170 +steppings" or similar to find forum's of people's results.

Considering i paid $350 to have this sucker sent to the UK i'm more than happy with the end result - an Athlon FX60 and possibly more!

I picked a Opteron 170 stepping: CCBWE 0551UPMW running at 3.0GHz at prime stable... its on air n the temps r pretty damn good i havent seen this chip go over 51 degrees yet n thats after playing some intensive games for a couple hours (quake 4 / BF2 / HL2 etc).. im not even using the greatest of coolers either just the Artic Cooling 64 Freezer Pro... seems to do a pretty good job though! if you find out what the best steppings are and have a gander on ebay then you shud be able to get 1 on their... but dude there is no point on getting an FX-60 even if you do have the money i wudnt suggest it....

What kind of volts etc are you using to get it to 3.0Ghz?

I managed to get 2.8Ghz at 1.5V but decided for system longevity to just run stock (1.35V) at 2.6Ghz (CnQ enabled!). But if I can pump 1.55 through it to get 3.0Ghz I might consider it!

Got proof to back your post up?

Since 0551's aren't 1 of the greatest steppings to hit 3Ghz.. ( i got 1)

Get a 165. I just got one off of eBay, a CCBBE 0610DPMW...notorious for hitting at least 2.8gigz on stock voltage...so 2.9gigz would probably be achievable on air, but a few have hit 3gigz air.

Almost all 170's, bad stepping or not, hit 2.6 stock voltage(1.35-1.4V). If you want one that hits 2.6 stock for sure, I'm selling mine. It goes to 2.7gigz@1.5V. Probably need watercooling or real good aircooling to push farther. It's a CCBWE 0609FPAW. $300 straight up + shipping.

But, there is also eBay, but you have to get lucky to get one under $380 dollars. Yet, I sense you care not for money, so go ahead and grab the 165 CCBBE for $450(Buy Now option) lol.

By the way, this dude King Kong has to be $hitting through his teeth. That or he's extremely lucky.

The FX-60 costs so much and you won´t get much for that price...

I would say go for the AMD64 3700+, it´s cheap and it can be overclocked up to around 3,0GHz with air cooling. Then you can spend the rest of your money that you have saved from not buying an FX-60 or Opteron 170 on 2Gb ram or better graphicscard...

I have an Opteron 175 overclocked 24/7 at 2.6GHz using 237x11, 1.5 volts cpu and 2.8volts RAM, timings are 2.5-3-3-7-2T running with 4 sticks of Corsair DDR. It will run stable at this timing to 246MHz running at 2.71GHz.
BTW this is with a HT of 1190MHz running 1:1
Temp idles at 34C/37C and full load 42C/46C

Man you would sell an opty 170...I just ordered one last night...

I got 170 retail (likely gonna H2O it but the kit I want is out of stock at frozencpu), x1900XT refurb for $380 @ the egg. Antec P180, Big enermax, DFI expert mobo, 2 Gig of Patriot 2.3.2.5, Custom HSF for the x1900xt seen here http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/04/14/is_the_kuformula_vf1_plus_the_formula_for_graphics_cooling/ from the egg DVD burner cheap as a deal with the case 3 x 250 Samsung Sata 2.0 HDD (os x 1, raid 1 for data/backup) and a few other things I cant remember...oh ya, Xfi too

Lots o peeps here seem to be putting high volts through their 170!!

I am running @ 1.45v to get my 2.8ghz stable. At 2.6 it was running on stock volts.

Definately do NOT get he FX-60, unless you do not want to overclock as most DC chips will hit the same speeds for much less $$!!

CCBWE 0551UPMW

Thats the stepping mine turned out to be shipped from newegg last week. Im seeking advice in my OC endevor. (bad spellun..lol). DFI-Lanparty NF4 SLI-DR mobo. Stock heatpipe HSF. I made a thread about it in the mobo/oc forum, any recomendations? Im qlueless bout HTT settings and such...Anyone with experience on this or similar board?

Kinda leanin towards stock Vcore so I can use C&Q, hopin for 2.6/core.

High overclocks on opty 170's really depend on their steppings. the older tpmw's are good, the 0550upmw's are ok, and the 0550vpmw's are supposedly the best. Rare to get 3.0ghz on air, will usually require chilled air/water/phase/etc. However, all of the above should be able to get 2.8ghz on air. My 0550upmw hits 2.85ghz stable on air (1.5 volts, 1T with memory divider and performance ram, thermaltake big typhoon, dfi lanparty, ExtremEngine 3T 25cm fan case). I am limited to 2.85ghz on my ccb1e 0550vpmw due to my msi k8n diamond plus mobo which i thought would be great due to it's dual 16x SLi capability, however am disappointed due to the fact it autoselects my voltage and won't let me go past 1.4v despite having great g.skill extreme ddr500 ram. When i switch it out for a DFI lanparty sli board I anticipate 2.9+ possibly 3.0ghz on air with increased voltage.

Regardless, you should be able to overclock any opty 170 to 2.6-2.7ghz on air , some will need more cooling/volts than others.

Replaced my opty 170 ccb1e 0550vpmw onto a DFI nf4 sli-d board. aerocool xfire air cooler, 2g g.skill ddr500 HZ ram. Artic silver is still burning in. 2.91ghz prime 95 rock stable on air 1.45v cpu/2.7v ram, 1T 3-4-4-8 5/6 divider, 4x HT. 2.95ghz ok for windows/antivirus/etc. but will freeze on 3dmark06. Adding volts doesn't seem to help, seems to be a cooling issue (38 idle 58 load). Just ordered an aerocool treme turbine 120mm fan that pushes 89cfm at 33dba (yeah I know there are 110-120cfm 120mm fans, but they are 45-50dba!) that I'll swap out for the 54cfm stock fan on the xfire. That'll probably do the trick. Don't know if I can hit the magical 3.0ghz on air and still maintain 1T timings though. 3dmark05 13,500 3dmark06 7,400 with 2 evga 7800gt co in SLI.
