I was wondering, everyone is always talking about adding fans, air flow etc etc etc. But one fact highly overlooked is the amount of dust inside your case/fans, so far every single system I had came to a point where it was simply nasty.
So heres my question what do you do to keep your system clean, how often do you do it and what kind of equipment/product do you use?
If you don't clean your system often how dirty is it?
I keep a can of air in my office and I have one in my tool bag for work. How hard is it to open your case for five seconds and blow out the fans and the fins on the heatsinks? Do it once a week or once a month or every time you open your case to do something. Neglecting preventative maintenance will destroy your box over time.
I unhook my PC take the side panel off and take the whole thing out to my bench then I use my vacume cleaner to suck up all the dust. Some people in the other thread say you shouldnt but I havent had anything bad happen to me from doing it for years... Cans of air are good too but I still think a good sucking is great ! lol
Edit: I usualy do this about once every month when its dry and dusty but if its been rainy and there is less dust sometimes I can go two or three months takes about 30 minutes to clean out realy well and reconnect (I usualy unplug my cards and memory to get at the dirt better and the last time I even took my HSF off to get it better P4...)
I only pop the hood and blast it with canned air twice a year (unless I am swapping parts) and there is a slight buildup laying around and on the heatsink.
Cleaning frequency depends on the environment, I recall a coworker had a brand new dell, after 2 years and it died just before the warranty ran out - the cpu heatsink was so clogged with dust / pet hair was way too much for it. Turns out the dog would lay at her feet when the pc was running in the winter and was never cleaned. Luckily Dell replaced the CPU / mobo and the tech even made a service visit to perform the swap out. Well I was glad.
Another cleaning nightmare was a dozen new pc's for a landscape company, similiarly was not cleaned for 3 years and one of them died. The color went from white to beige since they were all smokers and in the case were small piles of every soil product they offered - had to bring it outside and the canned air created a small dust storm. I literally had to wear a mask to do it I could barely see the pc sitting in front of me - was laughing pretty hard about it later since I had to shake out my hair before leaving the site...
My experience with this exact product is that it is not very powerful, and is no use for when cleaning inside of case, as you should have unplugged the computer when you open the case anyways. I use a combo of a vacume and a can of air, its always good to both suck and blow.
i use dust filters on all my fans then just wash them, means it takes twice as long for dust to build up within the system. with my current case though i cant work out how to take out the front filter(its a preatorian cooler Master).
the worst ive seen was in my old highschool the computers would often overheat and crash so the tech guy opened them up to have a look, think dust bunnies the size of your fist lol.
When I lived in michigan I probably could have went 1 year with out cleaning my PC (very little dust in that swamp....) but now I live in Florida and it has not rained in 2 months where I am this is a dusty environment...
I would suggest getting your computer off the floor if possible to keep it cleaner. My PCs would get dirty pretty quickly when I had them on the floor under my desk area. When I built my newest PC about 7 months ago, I decided to keep it up on a stand about 3 feet off the ground. After 7 months, the only dust you can see in it (it has a window) is right around the back fan; and that is VERY little.
Part of my job where I used to work was going into Wal-Mart back office to blow out all the dust from the 5 or 6 racks of machines they had. One of the stores I used to go to on a semi-regular basis was extremely bad; I had to run to the front and get some paper masks to finish the job. A lot of dust is simply human cast off skin cells and crap. I think it's disgusting.

Yes I would guess 90% of the dust is human skin and hair waste.... maybe less but im sure its over 50% !
I clean my pc from inside once a month. Take all dust with an air can, or small air compressor, and have all power supply cables organize, try too keep the away from processor as best possible, to keep CPU cool.
Dust will destroy hardware as time passes.
I clean my PC 3 times a year guaranteed (on my own LANs) and on every LAN I go to (like 2-3 LANs a year) and everytime I open my case for whatever reason.
So heres my question what do you do to keep your system clean...
You can't unless you leave it in a pastic bag and never use it!
They way I clean mine is with a 1" paint brush to get the dust freed up,then use a pipe cleaner to get all the HS fins done. Then a shot of air (makes 1 can last along time and alot cleaner job than just air).
I dont bother to clean it untill the cpu temps go 1C over normal as the room stays the same all the time.
i just did mine with the vacuum cleaner(dyson, droped temps by 5C the HS was dustier than i thought yet the rest of the system was fine, probably to do witht the whole in the inside of my case that brings air straight to the CPU(only place i dont have a dust filter lol.
