Freezing

My daughter's computer (Celeron, Win98SE) gets stuck, upon rebooting, at the
Windows 98 welcome page. If I hit Enter, nothing happens. If I hit Escape,
the next page after the welcome page comes up, but I can't go anywhere from
there. This happened while I was re-installing Mcafee Virus Scan. After
installation, I was instructed to re-boot the computer. I did so, and that
is when it froze on the Windows 98 welcome page. This computer worked fine
for several years until this incident. I can get into setup with F10, but
nothing else. Help !!!! Please !!!!

Boot the machine
Press and hold down the CTRL key or continually press the F8 key until the
startup menu appears.
Select Safe Mode from the menu
Uninstall McAfee via Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
Close CP.

Open either MyComputer or Explorer
Navigate to c:\windows\temp
In the right pane of the Temp folder click once on the top most listed item
Press CTRL+A to select all
Press Delete
Reboot.

Brian has the right answer. However, if Mcaffe is anything like Norton, it
may not let you uninstall it in Safe Mode. If it won't, then do the rest of
the stuff that Brian said (delete everything in the \windows\temp folder)
and then search for a file called "wininit.ini". If it exists, it will
probably be in your root directory or your windows directory. If you find
it, then either rename it or just delete it. Then see what happens.
