Hello,

If I have understood things correctly, Win 98 SE will be supported with
patches for critical updates till the end of June 2006. However when I
search for critical updates, which affect windows 98, at Download
center, I can't find patches for win98. An example is KB 893066, which
affects Win 98 SE. When I do a search at Download center, it only shows
up a patch for Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows server 2003.

So, is Win 98SE still supported and where to download the patches?

Ok bad example, but KB 888113 is critical and affects Win 98 SE. From
what I understand from FAQ you can only get the patch from Windows Update.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/s [...] 5-015.mspx

It doesn't show up in a search on Download Center.

So us that prefer not to have IE can't get the critical patches. I'm not
too surprised.

That one appears to be included at the Windows Update Catalog...

"START button, Windows Update", then...
(1) Click "Personalize..." in left pane & then check "Display the
link..." in right pane.
(2) Click "Windows Update Catalog" in left pane, which is now under "See
Also". (Perhaps you need to leave & re-enter the site to see it.)
(3) Click "Find Updates..." in right pane.
(4) Select OS in window & click "Search".
(5) Select "Critical Updates...".

You must decide which apply to your computer, when you take them that
way. And the literature may not be perfectly clear about it.

After installong that one, it will show up in "Control Panel, Add/Remove

Fred,

If you go to V4 of Windows Update,
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft. [...] efault.asp
-- you will find the actual critical updates for Win98 / Win98SE / WinME
there.

Thanks Mikhail, but I get an error when I click on the link. Maybe it
works with IE. I don't have IE and therefore Windows Update doesn't
work. And Windows Update seems to be the only way to get critical updates...

Yes, you are correct: you can get these updates only using IE. Cookies
and ActiveX must be enabled as well.

But you can get these updates at the other computer, even with Win2000
or WinXP of any language version installed, and save them (say, to flash
drive, or to CD, or in any other way) -- and install them later, after
transferring to your computer.

All the updates will be saves in the subfolders of WU folder, that will
be created in the folder you select for download.
