Just been thinking about clocking my Athlon XP 2800+ {I know, I know, it's old..}

But, not sure now, as even pre clocking it's at 65C - is this normal???
Admittedly I don't have any additional cooling - just the standard CPU fan. Although I do have a case with 4 fans.

More about : temperature 65c

If it's 65C at idle, that's not normal. Even under load, that's too high IMO. Replace the HSF with a new one before you overclock it.

Wow.. I agree with Luminaris. Did you ever take a look at the HS? Take the fan off, and see what kind of dust you can get off with compressed air, or.. I hate to say this... vacuum?

Can you check the fan rpm as well?

At a guess I would say the heat paste is dry and needs replacing, get some Arctic Silver 5.
Are the cooling fins on the heat sink clean of dust?

hm,

i got a zalman dropped it back to 33*C

prolly reapplying the therml paste will do the job

Yep you need to invest on new aftermarket HSF. A cpu with a hsf should be idling at 35-50c depending on the ambient air temperature. Find a good hsf through reviews and as well as a good thermalpaste. Keep in mind that you also need to have a good ventilation in your case and that it's taking plenty of cooled air and exhausting it as well. This is very important otherwise a hsf won't be able to do it's optimum cooling performance without a good supply of cool air. Place a fan on the side panel for example and point it to the hsf to get more cool air.

I see 177.5'F in your pic, bit hard to make out the 'c temp but guessing around 81'c

I have the standard P4 heatsink with Arctic Siler 5 on my 3.2GHz presscot and it runs at 33'c / 91'F also, room temp about 25'c.

I only have a cheap generic case with 2 fans venting out and the PSU fan.

my 2800 runs at 35 maybe you put the thermal gresse on wrong or get a new heat sink

That's one cold room your are in buddy. A 25c/77f room is very nice for a computer. I got about 30c/86f room temp and with a small water cooling I achieve a 33c idle and 45c full load.

That's pretty nice with water cooling (86F room temp).

I use the 7700 Zalman.

70F room temps - idle 42-43C - folding 49-50C
83F room temps - idle 44-45C - folding 55C

So.. when you run out of cool air... DOH!!!

But I guess it don't help room temps when I have 2 other PC humming away at folding...
