system:
AMD Athlon 64 +3700@2.520ghz 1mb cache warhammer core-socket 754
1024mb pc3200 ddr400@433mhz-not exact.
Vantec PCI dual cooling fan.
Ultra mid tower. 120mm, 80mm
500 watt PSU
XFX Geforce 6600GT AGP 500mhz core 1000mhz memory. 8 pixels/clock

im planning to upgrade so i can play oblivion with better detail and framerates. overall my 6600GT plays it well, just as well as a 6800GS.

(Canadian $)
config 1: 7600GT+ Socket 754 PCI-E mobo
config 2: 7800GS

Im wondering what should give me the best framerates. what im paying both configs cost about $350(Canadian $). And could i get some benchmarks for the two cards so i can really compare.

I think the ATi cards are supposed to perform better in Oblivion.
Yeah Oblivion does run better on ATi, but you seem to want nVidia, and that, of course, is fine. I say pick up the 7600GT and the PCI-Express motherboard, which will leave you with a better upgrade path for later on.

Do You Really Think That The X850XT Is A Good Idea, If So That's Great, But Perhaps You Could Stop Doing This Annoying Typing Thing It's Really Irritating

X850XT can't do HDR in Oblivion, but with bloom and FSAA it is faster than a 7800GT. It's cheap in the USA for PCI-e $165 no rebates, but not sure in Canada.

He would have to decide if he wants HDR and lower details(7600GT & 7800GS), or fsaa/bloom and higher details(X850XT). There is also the option to have both with a X1800XT! :p

ATI does seem to perform better on oblivion for now but Im sure Nvidia will release improved drivers for the game as well. I have the 7800GT and I run it maxed @ 1280x1024 and its a little choppy in the outdoor scenes but still playable. It gets down to around 20fps sometimes outside. I would probably go for the 7800GS.

We have been through this before. I also have a 7800GT (EVGA CO edition), and no way no how can it play oblivion at 1280x1024 MAX. Matter of fact it was so pitiful I upgraded to a X1800XT just for Oblivion. Indoors sure, I could believe it, but not outside. You must have many of the details turned down way below max, or you wouldn't average 20fps outside , never mind have a low of 20 fps.

If we look at Firingsquads high end Oblivion GPU review, the 7800GT averages 13.2 fps out in the foliage at the settings you claim to play at.

Lets look at Anand's GPU review. They are not testing anywhere near max details, yet the 7800GT averages 17.1 fps with a low of about 11 fps in their Oblivion Gate test.

Anyway, sorry to jump on you, but you aren't the first to make such claims. Please refrain from making false or misleading claims whether it's on purpose or just being careless. It could prove to be very misleading in someones buying decision and also it doesn't make you look good as it's easily proven wrong. The 7900GTX isn't even playable at 1280x1024 MAX details, and a 7800GT is way behind that.

If you are solely going to game on Oblivion, and other shader heavy games like FEAR, then ATI are the way to go. An X1800XL or XT will suit you well in the mid-range, and a X1800GTO in the budget end. If you really have to stick to nvidia, stick to either a 7600GT for the budget, or a 7900GT, not 7800GT. That way, you should be happy.

get the 7800gs if you arent goign to upgrade the system anyfurther. if u get the pcie mobo, the next time u want a new card would be the time for a new computer. imo oblivion aint worth dying for, but it sure is the only game with graphics even close to Final Fantasy

I have a 7900GTX and it performs OK in Oblivion. I don't have HDR/shadows or all the distance sliders up but the FPS still will drop outside often.
I'd say go with the PCI-E MB cause of upgradablity.

Spoken like a true FF fanboy.... sigh. FF games have the most unrealistic and badly proportioned graphics of all games. (not to mention very ugly IMO).

If you want to talk about bad proportions let's talk about every football (or Soccer as you probably call it) game ever made.
