I just built a new rig for my brother. It comes with an Asus A8N-E motherboard and he gave me a copy of Win XP Pro. The bios recognizes that an ethernet cable is connected to the onboard ethernet, but Windows doesn't and I can't connect to the network to download necessary files and stuff.

You need the cd that comes with motherboard and download the appropriate drivers to enable the network hardware of that motherboard.

Have you tried device manger? Does it show your network card?

reinstall the drivers for the network card (or install them if you havn't). Window's generic drivers sometimes don't cut it.

I have the same mobo and same problem. It connects to the LAN but that's it.
I've loaded the ASUS drivers that came with the mobo, except for the nVidia Firewall stuff.
