I installed a new printer today - same model Canon bubble jet and USB
connection as the one it replaces. While I didn't start out this way,
eventually I completely uninstalled the old one and reinstalled the new one,
even though the driver and every setting are the same. I now notice that I
have no printer listed under Device Manager, including in safe mode. In one
of the Canon tabs it says "Device Not Connected", referring to the name of
the printer port, USBPRN02, but it prints, so it is.

The printer seems to work fine and is listed under Add/Remove and under
Printers in Control Panel. But is it normal for the printer not to be listed
in Device Manager, and if it isn't, how can I correct it? (or should I just
forget about it?)

Although none of my printers are USB, none are or ever have been listed in DM.

Good, that's one less thing to worry about. Seems strange that they'd leave
it out though.

It's been quite some time but I think LPT1 didn't even show in DM if a printer
(not USB type) wasn't attached/installed.

Confirmed here, too (HP DeskJet 840C). Never has shown in DM as far as I
remember.

For what it's worth, my Lexmark Inkjet Color Printer is listed in
Device Manager, under Print USB. It's connected to a USB Hub, along
with three other devices, all listed. I don't know if it was listed
before I started using the Hub, which Windows recognized and installed
drivers for after I connected it.

Eureka! Maybe you can add to that "/turned on"(?). I just discovered that if
the printer is not turned on then it doesn't register in Device Manager, at
least for a USB connected device. When the printer is turned on it's listed
under Universal Serial Bus Controllers, at least in this case. Just tried
it. Same thing with the printer port, which is listed but shown as not being
connected to the printer unless the machine is turned on.

That may or may not have been true at one time
- I don't know one way or the other -
but I can tell you that LPT1
is listed in DM on one of my machines
which does not have a printer attached.
