About three months ago I had a bunch of threads in this group asking
about how to replace my hard drive with a new one and possibly
re-install the old
drive (which still works fine) as a backup medium. Gary Terhune was
giving me a lot of help. I then purchased a 20 GB drive from Dell but
put it aside for a while. All the messages were marked red (using Watch
Conversation) at the top of the group, so I figured I could refer to
them whenever I needed them. Those messages had remained displayed in
the group in my Outlook Express e-mail program all these months. But
today, when I'm ready to do the job, I look in the group, and all those
old messages have vanished! So I've more or less got to start over from
scratch.

What do you think is best? Seeking help here on how to do this? Or
just calling Dell Tech support and have them walk me through it? The
thing is, I'm not as confident in Dell Tech support as I used to be.

If you plan to reinstall Windows and all applications from scratch, make sure
you have all your drivers on hand.

Unplug the machine and DO NOT work on carpet.
Make sure you keep grounded with the case by keeping a body part in contact with
it or use a grounding strap.
Open the case and remove the old disk.
Jumper the old disk as the Slave drive, connect it to the middle connector on
the IDE ribbon cable, reinstall in bay and connect the power cable.
Re-plug the computer power cord.

Put a 98 boot disk w/CD support in the floppy drive and power up.
At the prompt type: fdisk and press Enter, press Y and Enter
Select 1 and press Enter. **Note: If you wish to partition the new drive, do not
use the full allocation and set the size you want as the Primary Volume. I
suggest 8GB to get maximized use on cluster size.
Follow the rest of the steps and once the Primary Volume is created, select 2 to
create extended volumes. Complete the same steps as you did in 1 with the
exception that you use the rest of the space for the extended volume.
Once the Extended volume is created select 2 again and create Logical volumes in
the Extended volume. You can use the entire space or any size you wish.
Once you have finished all with Fdisk, ESC out and reboot by pressing
CTRL+ALT+DEL.

Back at the command prompt type: format c: and press Enter
When finished reboot and take note of the CD drive assignment after you see
"preparing to load windows". (or something similar)

At the prompt type: the noted CD assignment and Press Enter (example if drive
assigned d:) d: and press Enter
Type: setup.exe and press Enter. **Note: if it fails to start or you get an
error message then at the prompt type: noted CD assignment:\setup.exe
Once Windows is finished installing, there are no more reboots, drivers are
installed and you feel good about it, shutdown and unplug.

Jumper the new drive as the Master and connect it to the end connector on the
IDE ribbon cable, install it and connect the power cable.
Reboot.

You should now be able to access the old drive and copy your data files over
(Not apps) for use with the apps you will reinstall. I recommend not
uninstalling/deleting anything until you are 100% sure your newly installed
system and all apps are tooling along without problems, perhaps not for a few
months.

You will not be able to use any extended volumes on the new drive until you
format them which can be done in Windows.
Open MyComputer, right click the extended volume and click Format in the popup
menu. Make sure it is not c: even though it shouldn't allow it.

If you have not the time to go to the library or
Google for information, ring Dell Support.
The task is so simply they are unlikely to
get it wrong.

Great. That Google Group result page is terrific, with the whole thread
laid out in tree form and on a single web page as well. I'll read it
over and refresh my memory and then see where I stand. Thanks so much
for finding this.

(I had searched for the thread myself via Google, without success; but I
didn't use the Google Group search.)

Hugh,

The way that huge, complex thread is displayed in the Google page is
just excellent, with all the messages on a single page so it's easy to
read through them, and with the older messages in each message
suppressed so you just see the new message in each message.

Can you tell me how you found it, what parameters you used in your
google search?

Also, having now refreshed my memory about what was said in that
four-month old discussion, I'm going to call Dell tomorrow and have them
walk me through the installation of the new hard drive.

Also, since the question of memory was discussed at length in the
thread, I should mention that yesterday I installed some new memory
(this is embarrassing but here goes), 128 MB replacing my 64 MB. It
makes a very significant difference in speed and responsiveness. I
could kick myself that I didn't do this years ago.

When I run a Google search, I just use common sense
in coming up with a search term.

In your case, I just went to groups.google.com
and typed in the information related to you,
which you can see if you have a look at the link I gave you.

See this bit
&q=larry+replace+hard+drive+dell

Larry replace hard drive dell

Those five words were enough to narrow the search.

Then I just looked for a post in this NG
dated three months ago, as you stated in your post
"About three months ago".

Then its just a matter of clicking the link,
and selecting "View as tree".

I could have also narrowed the search even further
by using group:microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion
in the search argument, but I haven't found that
to be reliable enough to be worth the effort.

Try this if Dell brushes you off

The change from 64 to 128 MB on my computer is dramatic. The biggest
change is in the speed with which a Word document opens. For example, I
have some specialized Word documents with AutoOpen macros that I run
with a Winkey in which the Word documents opens, performs whatever job
is in the AutoMacro (for example, pasting copied text from a web page
and formatting it a certain way for pasting into an e-mail), and then
closes again. Those jobs happen so fast now I don't even see Word open
and close. Also, Winkeys used to open Windows folders and applications
operate much faster, and switching from one open application to another
is much faster. It's a transformed experience, and because of my
stinginess of not wanting to spend $100 or so on the additional memory,
I had deprived myself of that and put up with an often irritatingly slow
operating system. Crazy.

The one area where 128 MB is still clearly not sufficient is with the
header and preview panes of Outlook Express 6. When you move the focus
from one header to another in OE 6, the preview pane goes dark for a
second before the next e-mail displays. This was not the case with
OE4, in which the next preview pane would display instantly. When I got
OE 6 and saw this problem, people said more memory would solve it, but
it doesn't.
