Portable USB drive issue

Hi,

I recently purchased a partable HDD for my laptop. When I plug it into my PC it works fine but when I plug it into the laptop the drive continuously beeps. Windows XP does detect it and install the drivers but it is not visable under Windows Explorer like it is when plugged into my PC. Any ideas why? Am i missing something?

Is it getting enough power? Some laptops don't put as much power to the USB ports as they're supposed to, and if the HDD doesn't have external power, maybe it isn't enough to run it.

Is the laptop running XP SP1 or SP2, if not the drive might be too big for it to recognize.

Also test the port with another USB 2.0 device to see if its working properly.

Have you tried plugging the hard drive into a self-powered USB hub?
