Okay, I got my DFI UT nF4 Ultra-D working. I haven't put 2 gigs in, only one peice of ram in so far. However, when I try to install windows from my cd, it all goes fine, until I hit the part when then install thing boots from HD and goes to "copying files". THen, it asks me to insert the correct windows xp SP1 cd, which I have in the drive. CAn anyone help me get XP working?

well if it is a SATA disk you may have to press F6 during the install when it asks you to do so and install the sata drivers.

If you have done that another thing that may help is creating a slipstreamed XP SP2 disk based on your current XP cd which is worth its weight in gold for the system builder since SP2 installation is known to be quirky and the only workaround for those instances.

good luck!

Since he has nforce4 chipset motherboard, he DON'T have to do F6. F6 is only for RAID. If RAID is correctly DISABLED in BIOS, then windows will install on SATA hdd just like PATA hdd.

Now, looks like your XP CD is bad. Get one with SP2 already integrated.

I agree it sounds like your XP CD or your optical drive is bad.

Get a new one or try Linux :-D

it's free ;-)

You can always dual boot.

Pop a Knoppix disk in and see if that works.

Windows works fine, I just don't get the other stuff like Disk Defrag. I tried downloading perfect disk and installing, but I get an error message. I had to enable DHCP to get to the internet. I can't defrag my hard drive =/.

I've tried linux before. Slack, to be exact.

Please run memtest overnight ( 8 - 12 hours ).

Or if you need to burn it under windows follow these instructions:

Download

http://memtest86.com/memtest86-3.2.iso.zip

+

http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com [...] rV2RC1.msi

Unzip memtest86 and record the ISO to a CDR with ISORecorder ( you must have XP SP2 ).

Good Luck :-D

The GUI is there, program is not. As I siad, my windows install was messed up. Got 2 gigs in, and tried out PerfectDisk 7. That doesn't work either, the error message reads something along the lnes of lost connection with PDEngine. I googled the error message, and no solutions were found. MSConfig doesn't work either, btw. Services that are set to automatic don't boot up. Only the vare necessities boot up. No biggie however, just makes my computer run like a dream! When I need to defrag, I'll have to find a cd boot up defragger. Anyone know one of those? I have no floppy drive =(

Upgrade to Linux or BSD and you will never have to defrag :-D

If windows is that messed up you might have other problems.

It is quite possible your install disk is scratched / damaged, your optical drive could be flaky or your hardware might be bad ( RAM, Motherboard, PSU, HDD = suspect ).

Well, I'm a gamer. Linux doesn't provide the fps i can obtain in Windows. I might set up Arch LInux into a dual-boot sometime, but I honestly don't use it much. Linux is better in every aspect except windows game compatibility. I don't do much networking, a bit of programming, a lot of gaming, and alot of work.

Linux is great for netoworking + programming + work :-D

Unfortunately it is not great for windoze games although native Linux games run very well.

With accellerated drives many games work quite well.

Windoze is better for windoze games with a few exceptions.

I am not sure if you're into some older games but XP broke compatibility with a TON of DOS / Windows games and apps so windoze is not exactly the world's perfect game platform, in fact there is no such thing.

I am still quite concerned about the problems you described, please run memtest overight along with PRIME95.

I don't play old games. I'm playing CSS, DODS, GW, and WoW.

It's just an XP install mess-up. Memory has nothing to do with hard drive defragmentation.

I hope so, I hope it's not something more serious.
