This came up while I was typing a letter in Microsoft Word 2000 and sometimes
when I start my computer. I was in word and went to insert menu and selected
symbol when my screen went blue an I had to restart my computer. The error
message is as follows:

A fatal exception 0D has occurred at 0000:00000000. The current app. will be
terminated.

I am clueless as to what this means and it seems to be happening more and
more reguarly. Any help that somebody can give me would be greatly
appreciated.

You are likely to get better advice in a NG
specializing in MS Word or MS Office. There
are more than 100 such NGs.

If this only happened once, then forget about it. It is likely due to a
happenstance overloading of some particular area of memory. If it's a
regular, repeatable issue, one you can repeat almost at will, then
there's something to work on.

A common cause of the 0D fatal exception is Adobe Type Manager.
Try this (courtesy MVP Rick Rogers):

Click Start>Run, type system.ini and click OK.
Scroll to the [boot] section, and look for this line:

system.drv=atmsystem.drv

Edit it to read

system.drv=system.drv

removing the "atm" part, then close saving changes and reboot.
