hi, im trying to set up windows 98 on a rather newer machine, and having
problems after the installation. i havent had a chance to check the model of
the mainboard inside, but its from a minitower with Microtel on the sticker
thing. im pretty sure its a miniatx from VIA, with one of their embedded
cpus. an 800mhz i think.

the board has one pci slot, a few ram slots, ONE ide and one floppy
connector. so the system is sharing one ide cable between a cdrom and hdd.
the hdd is set to master and the cd is slave. i dont use floppies for
anything post setup so the controller is disabled and i dont have a floppy
connected.

well, im not having problems with set up itself, but once i get to the
desktop, my cdrom doesnt show up in dev mgr or in my computer. and the last
tab in dev mgr says that drive a and c are using msdos compatibility, and
that other term that usually accompanies the 'drive compatibility' thing. i
need to install drivers for the board to work properly, but i cant install
drivers if my cdrom isnt being noticed. i am using a connor hdd, its quite
old and slow but it works. could that be the problem?

i would like to get my cdrom to work with the computer. theres nothing wrong
with the drive itself. but im sure if i got it to be noticed by the OS, i
could install drivers and do away with all the error-icons in dev mgr.

any help would be appreciated. when im back on next ill mention the model of
the board and any other specifics requested.

thanx

1. Go here and get the NOIDE fix. Apply it.

2. Restart in Safe Mode and go into Device Manager. Delete ALL drives,
ALL drive controllers, and the System device called "PCI Bus". Yes, I
said ALL and I mean ALL--except the FIFOs which can't be deleted (except
through a Registry hack, but that's usually not necessary). Also, review
the rest of the Device Manager listings in Safe Mode and report back
with any duplicated items, name and number of instances.

This may not be the fix, but it's a start in that it eliminates the
usual suspects.

Please tell us exactly what Conner hard drive you are using....model number, size
and so forth. According to one resource online:
"Conner Hard Drives (circa 1194 and older) used a different architecture for
operation, as did many of the hard drive made during this time frame. There is a
good possibility that it will not support the ATAPI device as slave."
