Ok im gonna try a different route here. Thought I had a good grasp on what I wanted but the brain is just smoking now. Im looking to have a new gaming system built but I need to purchase the items first. I know im probably being high maintanence here but could someone list me the parts on what they would think is the best system I could get for around 1500 bucks. I am willing to go up to 2000 bucks if it is a significant difference in performance. I want to be able to run todays games at the highest settings. Thank you in advance for your help. I need just the computer for this price. I can worry about the monitor later and I have the software that I need already.

I am going to assume you are in the US since you did not state otherwise.

Total $1498.94/$1533.76 shipped

Motherboard: DFI Lanparty Ultra D - $122.00
CPU- AMD Opteron 165- $327.00
RAM- Corsair XMS 2GB DDR 400 - $189 + $50 MIR
GPU- XFX 7900GTX 512MB - $509.00
Hard drive- WD 250GB SATA II 16MB cache -95.00
DVD- Lite-on DVD Burner $42.00 (comes with 10 DVDs free)
Case- Antec P180- $124.00
PSU- Antec Truepower II 550W- $89.00
Silver Thermal Compound- $5.99

The Opteron 165 is a great overclocker, and the board is great overclocking board. The 7900GTX will let you play anything on max. Hope this helps you!

Well that can make a sweet system. What I would do is

Opteron 175-$506.00
DFI Lanparty Ultra-D-$122.00
X1900XT-$449.00
2GB G.Skill Extream Ram-$164.00
Case and PSU-$250.00 (This is all up to your tastes)
250GB HDD-$90.00
DVD Drive-$40.00

Its about 1600

I would have to say, this is most definetly the best, for the best price. I personally wouldn't go with the P180 and such, but yeah, I admit, that case is awesome. I'm just a spend thrift. Always scheming new ways for me to save money. Like for instance my thing with ZZF. :D  Anyways, yeah, go for this set up, or mabye make the CPU a 170 if you really want. Though, it really isn't needed seeing as the 165 can safely OC to 2.65 with air cooling on some chips. Obviously the 170 will OC higher, but not too much higher.

DDay

Also, its good to see someone else take up the crusade of this RAM. I LOVE REBATES.

If this guy really is a n00b, he might not even know what overclocking is. He should probably get an A64 X2.

`Would I be better with the Athlon 64 times 2 4400? Or is the opteron better bang for the buck?

As angry_ducky said if you're going to OC get the Opteron, otherwise get the X2.

Do you even know what OCing is?

I know that it stands for overclocking but that is about it. Im just looking for the best gaming performance.

Another concern.... Are you wanting to include your monitor, keyboard, and mouse in that price?

The builds offered have been just for what goes in the case. The monitor can often be one of the most expensive components.

edit :: sorry, just reread the op. You did mention that you would worry about that later. Still it is good to know that a high end LCD screen can run a pretty chunk of change.
